What would be the best thing to upgrade for GTA 5?

I've got a fairly minimal set up but quite happy with it as I only play the low end games like Rocket League and Gmod. I bought GTA 5 to play with my friends and surprisingly runs fairly ok and normal settings, the fps isnt too bad (around 40-55) but what I do suffer with is stuttering/lagging when driving in cars and going into the city. What would be the best thing to upgrade? I am happy playing it on normal quality so not bothered about putting it on high/ultra just want the stuttering to stop.
Specs: i3 2120 3.5ghz GTX 650 1gb 4gb RAM. Thanks in advance :p

For cheap upgrade, i suggest you get another 4GB RAM stick to get the total to 8GB and upgrade your GPU as well to a GTX 750 Ti.

Just for reference, your current system vs GTA 5, (Pick the GD Adjusted Requirements.)

And after my suggestion, (Pick the GD Adjusted Requirements.)

The i3 isn't particularly good for gaming but the little GTX650 is your main issue, most likely the stuttering is caused by its low 1Gb of memory.
Check the settings; Features like Anti Aliasing and high detail levels (number of onscreen objects and draw distance) will rapidly eat that 1Gb of VRAM causing stuttering.
We'll need to know your budget before we can make any suggestions as to what you can upgrade to.

Budget isn't too much as I don't really want to get major upgrades.. I've got a 600w PSU and a h61 chipset motherboard (don't know if that helps because thats all the info I've got)

Yeah, I thought the RAM and GPU would be the issues. Will definitely look into getting more RAM for now but won't touch the GPU just yet

I might get a new GPU closer to Christmas so what will upgrading my RAM do to my performance?

With hopes that the PSU is of decent quality, you would benefit a lot from something like a RX 470, below that you could get a GTX 950 or wait a few weeks for the GTX 1050. The 470 is the fastest of these, and by a good amount.

You could do with a CPU and RAM upgrade as well, but without knowing the make and model of the motherboard it's hard to make a recommendation. You could pick up a used i5-2500 on eBay for around $80, or a i7 2600 for around $130, possibly even going to Ivy Bridge, but those cost more as they are newer. Again, without knowing the mobo, I can't tell if these are even compatible.

With double the RAM, you can run your RAM in dual channel and it's considerably faster than running it in single channel. Performance wise, it can reduce lag and stuttering.

Your system with upgraded RAM,

I'll definetly give the RAM an upgrade then and save up my wages and wait until around Xmas to get a new GPU because my budget would be a lot higher and I'll be able to buy a much more powerful one

You have a LGA1155 socket and the best price to performance would be an i5-3570. It's on par with the current i5-6400 from Skylake family.

Here's GTA 5 vs i5-3570, GTX 1050 Ti and 8GB RAM,

With this setup, you have a medium-end gaming rig.

You can go cheaper on CPU too, for example, an i5-3470 that is on par with the current i3-6100 from Skylake family.

Just for reference, here's a bench between your current system (base) and after upgrades (alternative),

Userbenchmark PC Build Comparison

Baseline Bench: Game 19%, Desk 40%, Work 17%
CPU: Intel Core i3-2120
GPU: Nvidia GTX 650
HDD: WD Blue 500GB (2010)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600 C9 1x4GB

Alternative Bench: Game 44%, Desk 52%, Work 32%
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti
HDD: WD Blue 500GB (2010)
RAM: G.SKILL RipjawsX DDR3 1600 C9 2x4GB

(Had to put in one generic HDD to make the bench work.)

Don't forget this comparison:

Thank you so much for your help, really appreciate all of it. Another question though, I was looking on amazon for a rough look at the 750Ti and came across this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-NVIDIA-750Ti-Dvi-D-Graphics/dp/B00SOXMPJY/ref=sr_1_8?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1478019907&sr=1-8&keywords=gtx+750+ti#Ask
But on Game Debate, there are 3 different types. A low profile, a gaming and an OC one. Would you mind telling me which one it is? Thank you

That depends.

Low profile GPU - Boost clock 1085 MHz / Base clock 1020 MHz.

OC GPU - Boost clock 1137 MHz / Base clock 1059 MHz.

Gaming GPU has three sets of boost/base clock which you can change using MSI Gaming app.
Boost clock 1085 MHz / Base clock 1020 MHz (Silent mode) - Same as low profile GPU.
Boost clock 1137 MHz / Base clock 1059 MHz (Gaming mode) - Same as OC GPU.
Boost clock 1163 MHz / Base clock 1085 MHz (OC mode) - Only available for Gaming GPU.

Besides switchable boost/base clocks, Gaming GPU also looks the nicest (in my opinion) and is the most expensive of the three.
With Gaming GPU, you have option to boost your GPU performance. If you play a game and see some lag, just switch the mode from Silent to Gaming or from Gaming to OC and you're good to go.
