I am thinking about buying a new pc but am unsure about my choices. I am going to get an i7 6700k, since I am into video editing and 3D modelling. I am not a huge gamer so I do not need the top of the line GPU. I was thinking about getting a Gtx 1050ti since it just came out. Will the performance of the 1050ti affect the performance of the i7 6700k?

Solution
Instead of a 6700k that is 300 bucks, get a Xeon E3 1231 v3. It's the same 8 threads but not overclockable. At 3.4 GHz, the multithreaded performance is good.
Unless you do want to overclock it..... Then get the 6700k then.
Gpu, it depends on if you are using cuda acceleration or OpenGL. AMd benefits from OpenGL while the nvidia, well cuda. And you need 16 GB ram, as some apps require that much to even launch. As for nvidia, 1050ti or 1060 are no bad choices, neither are if you go back a generation and get used 970. But it costs VRAM. AMD, get a 390/X or RX 470/460 if you want.

Solution
Opencl not opengl. Opengl is a graphics api like directx not a compute like opencl and cuda. The 1231v3 is haswell and quite a few programs saw a decent jump with skylake along with the optimizations with windows 10. But to answer the question, gpus can't bottleneck cpus, at least not in that sense. It won't affect the performance like cpus affect gpus.

Some software don't have support for gpu acceleration with the newest architecture yet so would suggest to look into what software you are using and see if they updated.
