Installing Java on linux

When you download Java, it's in tar.gz format. When I run the tar command to extract it, it works fine, but it's just a load of files, and I don't know what to do with it to install it. Please help.

Install it from your package manager...

I'm using crouton on chrome os. I tried to install Java but it was only able to get like 1_6 or something

Yes it is java version 6. Also consider using openjdk-jre.

Version 6 is all that is available for ubuntu 12.04, the default for crouton.

Read the crouton readme for how to install newer version of ubuntu which has.newer version of java/openjdk
