So i just built a new computer last week and have been using it steady with no issues at all until a few hours ago i noticed a some what faint but obviously present electrical burning smell. So i shutdown my PC, unplugged it and took the side panel off. I took a quick smell of the PSU and noticed that was where it was coming from. Now i want to say that the computer is running fine, nothing indicating there is a problem with the PSU such as shutting down randomly, refusing to boot, it just has this troubling burning smell too it that was not there initially. I am not sure if its an early sign i may have gotten a bad unit or not but i am very apprehensive to continue using my PC since i have heard the horror stories a plenty of a bad PSU frying an entire computer. The PSU i am using right now is a EVGA 500 B1. I decided to go the cheap route despite my better judgment so that i could get a better MB but now i am starting to regret cheaping out. So in short could i just be working myself up over nothing and the smell is just a result of the unit being new and will go away after some more use or could i have a serious system threatening issue on my hands. If i have to i am not afraid to cough up the cash to buy a damn fine PSU if it means my system with be secure.

Solution
From what you tell might you be better of rma'íng it before it really hurts.Maybe can get a refund and buy a better psu since considering it anyway.
