Hello all,

I am looking for some advice on a media server build, running Plex media server. I have been running on a readyNAS, but as I am sure you are all aware, it just doesn't have the power to do much transcoding.

Here is the build I have, coming in at just under $700. I am looking for ways to knock down the price as much as possible without sacrificing noticeable performance. I am running on a gigabit backbone network at home -wired to non mobile devices. Let me know if there is any other details needed that I have not provides.

Thanks!

In that case, you could probably get away with a Core i3-6100 and 8GB RAM. A 7200rpm HDD would also be advisable.

You wouldn't need an SSD unless you wanted to separate the OS from the media files, which I recommend you do.

Most often, only one. Occasionally two. The max ever would be 3, but very very rarely. Resolution is mixed, assume worst case scenerio's for trans coding. Video will be watched on phones, tablets, smart devices, consoles, and computers.
