hello guys

i'm a novice at building, so i come to you for advice. i want to run most games at ultra settings (dark souls 3 in particular) and be able to try out htc vive vr in all it's glory. note that i don't necessarily want to build a new tower, i just want to upgrade my old one. i think a gtx 1070 should suffice, but i am unsure about the rest of my hardware.

if you could tell me what i need to purchase to make this work i would be immensely grateful :)

i currently have an Acer Predator G3-605 with it's standard case, i think that's even the model of the motherboard, but i'm not sure.

--------------------------------------------------
my current system:

MB: Acer Predator G3-605 (i think)
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors
RAM: 32GB DDR3
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 4GB
Drives: 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD
--------------------------------------------------

i'm sorry if i missed any crucial information, please let me know.

thank you all and greetings from switzerland

EDIT:

i am terrible and only just read the sticky on how to properly ask for advice. i hereby apologize and do it the right way (hopefully)

Approximate Purchase Date: this november

Budget Range: as much as it needs to be to work properly

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming, gaming, tiny little bit of movie editing, gaming, streaming netflix/movies to 4k screen

Are you buying a monitor: Probably not.

Parts to Upgrade: GPU to gtx 1070, possibly other parts to make it work

Do you need to buy OS: no (using Win10)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: i don't have preferred websites yet, sorry

Location: City Lucerne in Country Switzerland

Parts Preferences: same thing as with websites

Overclocking: no / probably not. is it necessary/recommended?

SLI or Crossfire: no

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, sometimes 4k (i use my pc for streaming to a 4k screen occasionally)

Additional Comments: playing games all over the genre range, my most demanding ones being DOOM, Dark Souls 3 and possibly Space Engineers.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: i long for a smooth >60fps gaming experience with a little bit of graphical fidelity.

thanks again for your support :)

Solution
Maybe. You need to check what power supply your current graphics card has (what cables are plugged into it). If it doesn't have one, which is quite likely, you need to check what connectors your power supply unit has. If you can take photos of that I'm sure we could identify that way. 500w should be enough, and your GPU (again, a proprietary card designed exclusively for Acer) probably uses a pcie 3.0 x16 slot but check just in case, or post a pic.

Am fairly sure you can use it, it's just a bit quirky and not your normal run-of-the-mill setup.
Hi. I don't think that's your motherboard model. Can you run CpuZ and see what it says? Apart from that your system should accommodate a 1070 nicely, but 4k gaming at 60fps high settings is a challenge for any card on the market with some new AAA games.

Your CPU may struggle at the very top end, but it's not an unlocked chip so overclocking isn't really an issue, although it can be done.

Hi Multipack

thanks for your quick answer. i ran CpuZ, giving me Manufacturer Acer and Model Predator G3-605 for the motherboard. chipset intel haswell and southbridge intel B85, LPCIO Nuvoton NCT6779.

On top of that i figured out what kind of PSU i have: FSP500-50AAGA 500W

your PSU would be the deciding part here, if it can handle a 1070

as for 1070s, these cards represent the best value in Germany, and knowing Switzerland, you're probably better off importing from Germany anyway:

Gainward Phoenix 1070 ugly but one of the best cooling solutions of all 1070s and highend clock with Boost 3.0
Zotac AMP! 1070 a very popular card. Zotac have outdone themselves this time.
Inno3d iChill x4 the insider tip. very solid quality, very cool, good clocks and good overclocking potential

however for 4k a 1080 is really the minimum for 60fps
for 2k the 1070 is fine.

also you should take a measuring tape and measure out how much space there is in the case if you can't find specs online.
would be a shame if you bought a card and it doesn't fit

It's a proprietary Acer OEM board and has a special 12 pin power connector. It's hard to find any info on it, or what pcie slots it has etc. You can't even buy that board. Also, am not sure whether your PSU has a Pcie power supply. Thing is with pre-built PC's is they are not always that upgradable, and it may be that you need to replace both MB and PSU. Best thing to do is to maybe physically check the hardware.

thank you guys for your answers, multipack and isokolon. so what i gather from that information is that my current tower is an uncertainty. would it help if i posted a pic of my tower's interior? because i really have no idea what i would have to look for

Years later I give an update to the age old question. I bought a 1070 in... November 2016 I think. Didn't have to upgrade any other parts, just plugged the thing in (the cables already attached to the PSU sufficed) and didn't have any problems since. The setup runs most games smoothly in full HD, latest examples include Wolfenstein Youngblood and Ghost Recon Breakpoint Beta. Easy 60 FPS. Thanks for your expertise, mates :)
