LAPTOPS--I7 6500u + Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 520 vs I5 5200u with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 840M (2 GB DDR3)

Solution

No. That is false information.

It is the Intel HD Iris Pro Graphics 580 and Intel HD Iris Pro Graphics 6200 that are more powerful than the nVidia 940m. Those graphic cores are only in specific high end (and expensive) CPUs that are generally not found in laptops. The Intel HD 620 found in most Kaby Lake 7th generation CPUs is about equal to / slightly better than the nVidia 920m, That makes the Intel HD 520 less powerful than the nVidia 920m and...

Thanks for the quick reply..I'm looking for an affordable laptop for my daughter, starting uni studying animation, as an xmas present..I've narrowed it down to these two for ram and hdd in my budget and I was wondering which one you, with your knowledge and experience, would consider the most suitable all in..best all round etc..hope you don't mind taking a look as I have absolutely no bloody idea....

I can afford up to about 600 quid, and I know I probably won't get much for that in degree level animation computing terms but I have to try so any advice would be great...

Thanks for your help
Nick..

Definitely the i7 setup. HD 520 is as about as powerful as a 940M. Just make sure to have PLENTY of ram and Dual Channel is a must!

I primarily only purchase used laptops. Reason being, for 500 USD I just got a i7 4700MQ (4 cores, 8 threads) and a GTX 770M with 3GB GDDR5.

In fact, the Intel HD 520 is about equal to the nVidia 910m.

For graphics animation the GPU is rather important. I would definitely recommend getting the laptop with the i5-5500u & the 840m.

Where would this information be? In most benchmarks the 840m is +1% faster than the 520. Really comes down to what software is being used. Some utilize the CPU for most of the rendering. 64-bit GDDR3 cards don't have much on modern Intel iGPU's.

Some benchmarks, the 520 outscores the 840m by a large gap and vice versa.

520 is clocked at 1050Mhz and is 128-bit with memory speeds up to 2133Mhz. While, the 840m, is clocked at 1029 with 64-bit memory with speeds up to 2000mhz. 520 can allocate much more memory than the 840M as well.

If the 520 is running a DDR4 setup for the systems memory or has any other better specs than the 840m, go with the 520.

Personally, I'd buy a gently used portable workstation such as an elitebook with a Nvidia Quadro or AMD Firepro card as they are engineered for 2D/3D editing. Even some of the older generations would walk circles around both of these systems for animation or CAD.

You can look at mobile GPU benchmarks at www.notebookcheck.net. While I do not 100% agree with all their rankings, it is basically the only source that I am aware of that have a very extensive list of both mobile GPUs (some desktop GPUs are thrown in as well) and benchmarks.

The basically have two categories of benchmarks; one is synthetic benchmarks which is not always the most reliable because they are synthetic rather than actual applications.

Then there are the game benchmarks using actual games.
