With a brand new laptop that has never been booted up, is it possible to swap out the HDD to an SSD and have it go through the Windows installation process or will that only happen on the default HDD?

Solution
how are you installing windows ? via cd.... should work. if it is an install on the HDD then no. of coruse making the backup disk and then swapping the HDD for an SSD then installing of the disk, would work.

kind of. they went out of favor a while agao as it was not cost effective to send out the CD. >< yeah right ! BUUUT most have a section of the HDD with recovery in it and you can usually make CD/DVD for recovery. look (serch in start) for a program saying something about recovery. it should prompt you to make discs. if you cant find it call the company that makes you laptop ask if there is a way to make the back up cd/dvd ...

You can obtain the WIN 10 install media here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

But generally, you'd need to turn the PC on and let the installed OS activate first.

THEN you can take that drive out and install on the SSD.
