Hi all,

So for no reason my PC stops powering on one day. I'm a little confused as to when this happened and cant identify anything that led to it.

So I've been trying to fix it and have found the following:

- The fuses on the plug for the PC gave up.
- I have replaced the cable with another that I know works.
- I moved the PC unit to a completely new supply...when it promptly threw the breaker switch.

Any ideas on the cause?

Hey - have considered that -just ordering a replacement. It's a Corsair 650, though it's getting on. Any other possibilities? Can a short hypothetically develop in the system itself?

a short on any components? possible, but hard to test, what is the rest of your system spec?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the input - I have now received the new PSU and have managed to determine that this is the case. Unfortunately, the new unit is weak - it isn't driving enough power for me to use all parts of my build. I have included the build spec below as it currently stands below, and will try to rename the thread - we're now on a hunt for a replacement power supply!

Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43
CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz
RAM: 2 x Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz Vengeance Pro (total RAM = 16Gb)
GPU: Zotac Reference GeForce GTX 970 4GB
Primary HDD: OCZ 120GB Vertex 3 SATA III 2.5
Secondary HDD: 2 x Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm
Optical Drives: 1 x DVDRW

I'm looking to get a supply that will power this, with some possibility of adding some extra storage in the future.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Rich

Hi,

The replacement is a PowerCool model, with the following "listed" ampage:

3.3V - 20A, 5V - 20A, +12V - 42A, -12V - 0.5A, +5VSB - 2.5A.

However, I have had to unplug both my Optical Drive & one of my Seagate HDD to even get it to boot properly - before that it was unreliably resetting at the Windows logo, or not powering the USB devices properly.

I have done a power supply review (http://outervision.com/b/iJhMHJ) and this supply should in theory be good enough. I have put in a return request on this to get the ball rolling.

Hi both,

Thanks for the quick replies.

Turkey3 - Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean when you say that power supplies don't run out of power?

mjslakeridge - Ye gods, thanks for showing me this. I will power down my PC immediately (scary warning!) and look at some of the items from the tiers you recommend. Thanks!

Hi SR71,

Sorry you posted after I started my reply.

Thanks for the feedback on the Motherboard - I appreciate it. I never OC really, and I've never had a problem that can be attributed back to the MOBO since I got it. I will bear it in mind should anything else arise though./
