Hey techies. I can't seem to find a answer to my question through normal research, maybe you can help me out.

I own a Gigabyte ga-z97x-gaming 7 mobo and G Skill DDR3 1866 16gb Dual channel 2x8gb

Question is. I have 4 slots for ram. Slots 1 & 3 are color coded, Slots 2 & 4 are color coded for dual channel capability. 1 stick works in slots 1 & 2, I cannot seem to get 1 stick to work in 3 & 4, this obviously might be a warranty issue (Im looking into a RMA, but would like to be sure before i contact customer support on a ID10T error.) I can use both 8gb sticks in slots 1 & 2 and it boots fine to equal the full 16gb. This is obviously not optimum but Is this safe/ what are the disadvantages to doing this? Is there anyway to enable Dual channel configuration on non color coded slots?

Also, does anyone know what DDR ch (a/b) voltage protection does? I'm wondering if this is effecting or causing my boot to stop and loop when i attempt color coordination?

Is this a dual channel 'kit' (sold together as 2x8GB), or two individual modules of the same brand/speed/timings?

I don't believe there is any way to enable 'dual channel' when not utilizing the same same 'channel' on the motherboard - dual channel is a chipset/CPU feature, so won't work in differing channel slots.

Have you cleared your CMOS?

Yes, this is a dual channel kit, both sticks are working fine.
Yes I have cleared the CMOS, and tested again in all slots, It did not work.

Negative, Dual Channel was working in slots 1 & 3 when I originally purchased. Slot 3 failed. Tested both sticks in slot 1. One of the sticks was causing a freeze once booted into windows. Sent the ram in for RMA, got the return. Now I'm on troubleshooting the mobo, cant even get a boot from a single stick in slots 3 & 4.. 1 & 2 work fine.

Thanks for your help. Any more ideas?
