Hello all, thank you in advance for your help!!!

Specs:
Asus P8Z 68-V LX
16 GB DDR3
i5-3570k (Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan should be here tomorrow and that is when I will want to overclock my CPU)
MSI Gaming 4GB GTX 970 GFX Card
2 HDD's 1TB Ea.

-------------------------------------------------

Question 1)

I've been using MSI Afterburner to try different OC settings. Some gave me black screen and I had to reboot, some worked really well but I screwed that up by trying to up the settings from there. I kept trying new settings until I got a message on Afterburner saying lost connection to a GPU so I got scared and stopped what I was doing and came here to write about it in hopes of someone coming to my rescue haha. - So my question is, what are some good settings for my specs to input into Afterburner? I read somewhere on the forums here that maxing out the core voltage and power limit is fine since temp doesn't go too far up. Any help here would be great! Thank you!!

Question 2)

How would I go about overclocking my i5-3570k once my Cooler Master 212 EVO comes in the mail tomorrow? Specific application to use or do I do it from the bios and alter settings in there? Would appreciate any enlightenment on the subject, thank you guys so much, you are always such a great help!

love this site.

i guess i can take a crack.

heres what u do first: dont ask ppl to tell you what to do. you have to do research. youtube is great.

find out what model cpu and mobo you have. search it and have a feel for what results others are getting and what they did to get it. also note the cooling apparatus.

in your case installing cooler is the first step. mess that up and u got nothing to overclock

I did a whole lot of research, none of which has helped me overclock unfortunately. That is why I came here.

I posted my specs in the post, did you not see that?

Well, I went into my bios and messed with various settings, like the built in OC Tuner, as well as turning it off and manually setting multipliers up to up the GHz of my CPU. I reboot and nothing changes. I thought to myself, maybe its because I didn't up the voltage to the cpu so I look into that and it tells me to set it to 1.15v and I attempt to do that but my bios says it only goes up to 0.654 which totally confused me. Maybe its my motherboard limitations? I'm not sure. It's all very confusing.

After all that, I tried to cheat my way with a more simple newbie method by using Intel Extreme Utility to overclock my CPU and that just gave me either a BSOD on impact (right after clicking "apply") or it apparently had no effect at all because upon opening my windows pc properties the speed was still at 3.4ghz.

So now I'm just baffled at the complexity of it all and had nowhere else to go.

I'm sorry I know I'm new to all this and it's hard to deal with noobs. :(

First off, everyone starts somewhere. Its up to you how open or ignorant you want to be.
The first time I overclocked i had zero clue. I wanted to make it hard for myself so I spent over a week researching stuff and testing. I didn't even post here nor anywhere else asking for help. Not saying you shouldn't, its how I learned.
I overclocked a Q9300, honestly not the easiest thing to do.
the 'k' chips should be relatively easy and straight forward for an average overclock speed. find that sweet spot and get ur system there first. then move on.

also.. try not to touch things you don't know. and when u adjust remember what you did and dont touch 10 things and then reboot. chances are its not gonna load and you're not gonna remember what you had before.
---VOLTAGE-- do not be stupid on that.

The problem I face is no one has my motherboard and I'm thinking it might be a limitation with that. However, there is no way to confirm this without being super experienced with the subject. I've seen 100s of videos showing how its done but when I try it myself, it simply doesn't pick up speed. Hence, my asking questions on forums.

No one can just hand you an overclock profile that just works. Overclocking is not an exact science. Different computers containing the same components will behave wildly differently. Even different programs on the same computer will respond differently to the same overclock, especially for GPU overclocks.

The only way to get an overclock that will work for you is to experiment. Slowly. You won't get this done in a day. You might not get it done in a week. I spent a couple months dialing mine in back in the day. It will be a slow, painstaking process of trial and error, paying more attention to your temps than your games, and an obsession until you're satisfied that you can't push it any more. It might become a money sink, as the desire for better cooling, better voltages, and better power consistency compel you to buy things you wouldn't have imagined before. You may have to repeat this process dozens of times, forming an overclock profile for each game you play, for each program you use.

There is no easy way out. Start at the beginning.

what he said. its like looking at a mirror keke

OP: I dont know what your situation is with money and what performance you want. Although its an experience i wanted, i also rather not have spent that much time overclocking an older system.
If u use the computer as much as u sleep then i suggest u invest into it. if its just 30mins or so a day i wouldnt.

my personal experience from a q9300 to a i5 6400... its level capabilities is a lot higher. for what its worth.. u might like what u did with ur 3570k.. but i can be sure after u learned how to oc, u will get a new rig shortly after.

just keep that in mind. do u want to invest money and time on old stuff or new stuff
