my pc config is i5 6402p, 8 gb ddr4 ram, ati hd5770, 1 ssd, 1 hdd, dvd writer, 19' moniter. 550W PSU. I want to buy a new UPS as
my old UPS (600VA) not supporting this config. I went to nehru place to research on UPS. Some says 800VA will work, some says
atleast 1KVA UPS required. I am confused which 1 to buy. I need just 5 min. backup to shut down the pc when electricity goes
off.

Solution
550W is the max of your PSU but not the real consumption of your rig.
Your rig will consume max around 400W.
Assuming the power factor is about 60-70%, you will get about 650VA.
This is the minimum needed UPS, I would recommend to buy about 750-850VA just to be sure. 1KVA is a bit too much. Too much is ok just, higher UPS should be more expensive.
5 min or 10 min is something else, this is the hold-time, you can add extra batteries so that the UPS can hold longer.
Beside capacity, you need UPS with pure sinewave output for the new PSUs. Up to 10mins, you should be ok with the included battery.
If your system pulls 500w continues for 30min on the backup you would need a 1500VA unit. 500w @ 5min you could get by with a 1000VA

You really need to know how much power your system really pulls, is it actually 550w or is it maybe mid 400's. Then determine how long you want to run on battery backup.

500w @ 5min with a 1000va unit is 83% max capacity used.
400w @ 5min with a 1000va unit is 67% max capacity used.

Get a APC BR1000G runs $122 on amazon

You also have to figure in he will need his monitor plugged into this so he can see what hes doing to shut down the computer.

how long the UPS can hold on depends on the battery, ignoring the UPS max rating.
If your PC consumes consumes 400VA and the battery has the capacity of 200vah, it can hold 30 mins non-stop.
If your PC consumes 800VA and the battery has the capacity of 200vah, it can hold 15mins non-stop.

The UPS is rated usingh the max it can support e.g. 800VA.
It is possible that this 800VA UPS is equiped e.g. only with 200VAh.
You can also ugrade the UPS with bigger battery so that it can hold longer.
However, the max rating is still 800VA.

Saying:
500w @ 5min with a 1000va unit is 83% max capacity used.
400w @ 5min with a 1000va unit is 67% max capacity used.
Is thus not entirely true.
This is valid only if assuming that a particular battery is used by the 1000VA UPS.
Other 1000VA UPS with bigger or smaller battery will have other hold-on time.
