Hello, I am having a little bit of trouble finding the source of a problem regarding my gpu sparking/smoking directly after start up.

I was recently playing the game Rust for several hours with friends before my computer shutdown. When I tried to power it up after it shutdown the power button would show an led for a split second without start up. I tried this several times before letting my computer cool off because I noticed the psu seemed really hot when touching it on the back of my case. I angled my fan towards my computer for about 20 minutes and also flipped the switch to off on my psu. When I returned to my computer I turned my psu back on (it was cool at this point) and tried to start up my pc. The pc started normally, but a few seconds later I noticed a hissing noise from the case and saw sparks/fire coming from the gpu followed by a bad smell. The Sparks lasted only a couple seconds before going out. I left my computer overnight believing it was destroyed. The next morning, I removed the gpu (EVGA gtx 970 ssc ACX 2.0) from my computer and didn't see any visible damage. I put my brothers Gtx 750 into my computer to see if it would work and it actually worked fine with no problems. His gpu used to be my old one before replacing it a year ago. My psu is a Corsair cx750m 750w ATX.

I recently ordered a replacement card under a 3 year warranty by EVGA. Both my psu and gpu are less than a year old (about 10 months)

I'm having trouble finding out if the problem was the gpu or psu because I don't want to ruin my replacement card. Rust is the only game that has ever crashed my computer. It has happened a few times before, but never caused my gpu to spark.

Can someone let me know if I need a new psu or if the gpu just went bad? Thanks in advance.

Hello!

I think in this case it would be best that you replace your PSU as well, judging by the fact that your PSU is getting very hot it could be a fault with it so just for good measure I would say that you should get a new PSU as well, that way you can be rest assured that nothing else will break any time soon :)

This is what I would do in your situation anyway.
