How to tell if Power Supply Fan is working correctly

Last night I smelled something acrid in my office. Thought it might be a piece of electronics or something from my PC. My nose couldn't find anything and the PC seemed to be working fine. This morning I opened the case to take a look when I turned it on. It started up normally and all fans seemed to be working. In a very short time (seconds later) the cooling fan on the power supply (Ultra 650 ATX) stopped running. I re-checked again later by restarting and the same thing. I did some fairly intensive computing to see if I could get the fan to start, thinking the stoppage might just be a thermostat control which would keep it from running until a certain temperature was reached. It is a very cool day and after a half hour of doing some Rendering which sometimes triggers it, I still couldn't get the fan to run. But again, it ran on startup. I found an Asus monitor program and for some reason it shows a Power Fan as running and chassis fans as not running though it should be the reverse.

  • since the fan DOES run on start up, should I assume it's working and the PC is not the cause?

Is there a way to trigger the Power Supply fan to run so I can determine it's functioning after start up?

Thanks

Mmmmmmmm......very strange.

I checked and your PSU does not have an 0dB operating option, basically means the PSU will not turn the fan on until it needs to, so under certain loads or reaching a certain temperature but your does not.

So the fan spins on POST but not when in Windows or running a load on the PSU.

I wouldn't rely on the Asus Monitoring software as it is designed for monitoring Asus PSU's who have the correct support for it.

Something does seem wrong but it's not that the fan does not work otherwise it would not spin during POST.

Personally, I would just replace with a better PSU from a more well know brand like Corsair. You can pickup a decent 600W non-modular Corsair PSU for about £35 - £40 on felabay these days or sometimes even cheaper if you go for an OCZ older model.

Well if the power is working and the fan works on start up as it's supposed to, I think I should try and do some more testing to see if I can overheat it and get the fan to start. No point in replacing something that might not need it.

I assume the only way to get the fan to start would be to get the chassis temperature up to a certain level. Does anyone know what that might be so I can monitor the temperature with the Asus software while waiting for it to kick on?
