My PC currently has a AMD FX-8120, and I was wondering if there are any worthwhile CPUs I could upgrade without changing my motherboard that would give a noticable performance increase?

Solution
It depends on your motherboard, but given that you already have the FX-8120 you should be able to handle any of the 125W chips.

That being said...you're currently 4th on the hierarchy chart (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-hierarchy,4312.html), so with the minimum 2-tier improvement you need to look for, you're pretty much wanting to get another of the FX-83xx series. Tom's is recommending the FX-8300 as their mid-range AMD CPU pick (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-cpus,3986.html), & it's only about $110 USD.

Barring that, there's not a whole lot you can do to improve without starting with a new build.

I think at this point I'd rather just replace the motherboard to something that can handle an I5-I7. An if I do that I'm more likely to replace the whoke PC.

That's perfectly fine, as long as it's within your budget. It would also be the time to switch over to an SSD for your OS/HDD for your file storage configuration, as well as upgrading your GPU. But if you're a little tight on your budget, then consider the CPU upgrade as something to tide you over for another 6-12 months.

Yeah I recently replaced the gpu the PC came with from HP with a RX 460 Windforce OC 4gb. Was $100 and I thought that was a steal. I'm currently saving for minor upgrades as my budget is limited to $100 a month for gaming.
