I currently have two GPUs in my possession, an EVGA 1070 and an EVGA 980 TI.

My question is this: which should I put in my main rig(used for 4k) and which should I put in my livingroom rig (used for VR)

Solution
The 1070 for VR, and there's no question about that.
Throw the 1080 in your personal 4k rig. The 980ti might not be able to MAX games (especially these new AAA games) on max settings + 4k, but it will deliver what you are looking for.

The 1070 has 8GB of VRAM, not only that, but it has VR support. Typically that means you'll run VR ready games at 1.6x faster than your typical card.
The heat output for the 1070 is significantly better as well. Also HEVC, HDR, higher DP/HDMI bandwidth. These are really just the first few things that come to mind when talking about VR ready GPUs (like the 1070).
