if i want to see if the cpu and mobo are working correctly how do i do it? before putting everything in my case. i have a MSI Z170-A PRO LGA 1151 Intel Z170 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard and core i5-6600K if that changes anything

Solution
You can take a screwdriver and touch the two pins that you plug the power button into. Just touch it to those 2 pins for a second or two and your PC will turn on (assuming everything is wired correctly of course).

Put it all together outside the case.
Breadboarding.

Once you've satisfied yourself that it works, take it apart and then put it all together inside the case.

On the motherboard, locate the 2 pins (+ -) where the case power switch connects to.
Momentarily short across those 2 pins.

Some newer motherboards have a push button specifically for this.
