Last August I bought an Alienware laptop. It comes with 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD. At the time, the laptop didn't detect the HDD, therefore I sent it back to the shop where I bought it, and after they finished doing something I don't know, it is working normally.

However, this past month the HDD started to act strangely. Sometimes when I boot up, It wasn't detected by my laptop. I scanned for it in disk management, still not detected. And also if it was detected since the boot up, whenever I put my laptop to sleep and woke it up again, it just disappeared from disk management and windows explorer.

And last day, it didn't show up even once. This is driving me nuts as I put all my work and media files in that drive, as I preserved my SSD for OS files only.

Any clue ? is it faulty HDD or faulty MOBO ?

Please I bought this laptop for lots of money, and to have it not working properly is stressing me out so much.

Hey there, @bernandops!

Since you have bought the laptop recently, I believe it should still be covered by the warranty, so I'd definitely not advise you to tamper with the hardware physically by yourself as you would most probably void it. The issue could be due to a failed connection, maybe a faulty SATA connector inside or as @Hamperking mentioned a faulty HDD. However, I'd still take the laptop back to the shot where you bought it from and ask them to try and access the contents of the 1 TB HDD from another computer. If the drive is healthy, it should pop up and you should be able to backup all the data from it elsewhere.

Hi,

The is almost definitely a fault with the HDD. The can be caused by a few issues with the most common being issues with the drive spinning up.

Take it back again and demand they replace your drive. In some places they have to replace the drive or the whole laptop by law. E.g. Australia.

In the meantime, if you manage to detect the HDD again, back up all the data from it somewhere off-site to an external or some other storage device. It'd also be a good idea to run its manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic utility and check up on the health and SMART status.

Hope this was helpful. Let us know if you have more questions.
