So I want to start a W.ISP, but I only know the small details. I am confident 900-1000 households would be willing to sign up in our area which is a decently sized community in the rural country of southern Ontario Canada.

The closest town is about km (or 6.2 miles) out, and provides decent cable services (that I know of) up to 100mbps. These services (as I know of) are Rogers, Bell, and Shaw (Rogers)

So my question is, how do I start? What do I need to buy? How to do I obtain the network? How will I service this network to customers? And finally what might the approximate total costs be?

Thanks, I am seriously thinking about doing this

Alright Ill do the research. But yes I am serious.800-900 homes in a remote area. There is a road piled with homes that goes all the way straight to town. And also a medium sized community of houses on a 1-way loop where I live at.

Also as a side note, I've read about people doing up to 2000 homes in remote areas just to get my point out. Maybe your used to dispersed areas when you think about rural but its not like that at all 'round here.

Thanks for the input anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The technical question is pretty simple there are only a couple major providers of good WISP equipment. The much harder issue is how are you going to setup the business. Setting up a way to get paid and provide customer service is going to be the hard part. Not to mention all the issue of hiring people and getting all the thing the government requires you to have for a business. You maybe better off finding a WISP that operates near you and see if you can convince them to setup the area. You could offer to invest in their business to offset some of the costs of setting it up which will be far less costly than you setting it all up yourself.

You have to remember WISP is expensive to operate compared to cable and you have a lot of people that will be very resistant to paying the monthly costs that will be required so it greatly reduces your customer base.
