Games keep crashing after about 10 minutes of play

Hey all,

I recently finished a new build and at first everything was great. Then suddenly out of nowhere most of my games started crashing after about 10 minutes of play.

Here are the specs:

Intel Core i5-6600k (OC to 4.4GHz)
16GB G Skill Ripjaws 5 3000
Asus Z170E Motherboard
Asus Strix GTX 1080 A8G GPU
Windows 10 pro 64 bit
EVGA 650 GQ PSU

So most games will run perfectly fine for about 10-20 minutes before the video just freezes. Sound and game control are still there though. Games like Shadow of Mordor, Fallout 4, Overwatch all crash. However I can play League of Legends and even Doom fine. I have tried everything I can think of. All my drivers are up to date. (Even used DDU to clean out nVidia drivers and reinstall.) I run all my games at max settings at 4k but I also tried 1080p at lowest settings, which I could play for a little longer (maybe 30 mins) but still crashed. I don't believe it is a heat issue, my CPU doesn't go above 45 or so and my GPU maxes at around 75. I also used the built in Windows Memory checker and it said there are no problems. I am completely out of ideas at this point so any insight would be much appreciated. If you need more information I can provide it.

Thanks in advance

Solution
So for anyone curious, the problem ended up being the on screen display program I was using, RivaTuner. For some reason the OSD was causing games to crash. Who would've guessed? So I just got rid of it and everything is fine now. Thanks to everyone who offered up advice.

Cheers

Hello!

It could be your PSU that is at fault here, as soon as the pc turns itself off is the PSU rather hot?

If it is being stressed then chances are a fail-safe somewhere is tripping that is making your PC shut down.

Do you hear any weird noises at all before it happens?

Hi there!

The PC doesn't shut down or restart or anything. The only thing that happens is the video freezes. But the audio is still going; I can hear my character still moving or shooting or whatever when giving keyboard/mouse inputs.
But I checked the PSU and it's pretty cool to the touch.
And nope, don't notice any strange noises or anything.

Nope, no luck there. At this point I'm thinking about just RMAing my GPU or something just to see what happens... :( Unless you or anyone else has any other ideas?

Try uninstalling your GPU drivers and installing the newest ones.

To uninstall drivers see this: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10/~/how-do-i-uninstall-my-nvidia-display-drivers-on-a-microsoft-windows-based-pc%3F

To download new drivers, use Nvidia Geforce Experience and that will automatically choose the best drivers for your setup and install the drivers.

It's probably an unstable overclock. Just because an overclock is stable in a benchmarking utility does not mean it's stable in game. The loads are just drastically different. Did you try bumping up the CPU voltage offset to see if more voltage doesn't fix the problem? If you're using XMP, try disabling XMP and see if stability doesn't increase.

If your GPU is overclocked too, you might have an unstable GPU overclock too. It might be manual, it might be GPU Boost 3.0, but it could be unstable. Usually, when I see my screen go black, but still have sound and game control, It's a telltale sign that my GPU overclock is unstable, ever so slightly unstable.

So this has been my most recent path for trying to fix it. I do have an overclock profile for my GPU in GPU Tweak 2 but I haven't been using it and instead been using the default gaming profile Asus provides. I also reset my CPU to default in the BIOS. I've then tried running Shadow of Mordor in all possible combinations of stock/OC CPU, XMP/no XMP, and stock/OC GPU. Actually, the most stable seems to have been OC CPU, XMP, and OC GPU but I don't really know what to make of that. I did also try bumping the CPU voltage up to about 1.32 @ 4.4GHz which seemed to help slightly.

Perhaps I just got really unlucky and lost both the CPU and GPU silicon lottery? Would running either CPU or GPU underclocked provide any useful information?

So a quick update. I ran shadow of mordor with stock cpu settings, no XMP, and an underclocked GPU and was able to get most of the way through a mission, maybe 15-20 minutes of game play. Which was better than some of the other combinations I've tried. At this point I've exhausted all the options I can think of and I think I'm just gonna RMA the card and see what happens then. At least then I'll know for sure if it is indeed a problem with the GPU right?

Are you using an on screen display while playing games?
