Hi dear community,

My Friend's got a problem with his newly bought GPU since the old one died.
So we are seeking for your help. Thanks beforehand.

His new GPU: Sapphire NITRO Radeon RX 460 OC
His old GPU: XFX AMD Radeon HD7870

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA H77 D3H

Short version of the problem occuring:

It seems that the new GPU is not compatible with his current setup (motherboard) but I don't really have an idea why that is. Without the new GPU (GPU is plugged into the PCI slot in the motherboard but not connected to the power) his system will boot with the onboard graphics just fine and we can enter the BIOS.
But if we Plug in the GPU to the power we get no signal at all. The monitor remains black.

So i checked the requirements for the GPU and it says there needs to be a PCI x16 slot available but i think his motherboard only has x4 Slots. So i googled a bit but the research said that it was ""backwards compatible" technology". Is that true?

On the other hand if we switch GPU's with his brother's PC it works fine although the GPU of his brothers should have higher requirements.
GPU of brother: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (idk with model it is exactly, i will research if necessary)

I also found out from research that a BIOS update might work but we haven't tried it yet. What do you think? (Current BIOS version says "F7")

Do you guys have any idea what might be the problem?

(btw i am not a native english speaker and neither an expert at building PC's so please be kind with me)

thanks in advance,
michael

I also checked the power supply (Model: BQT E9 450W) and it matches the requirements of the GPU. At least the combined power of 450W. Is that enough?

Try clearing CMOS and if that doesn't work, try flashing your BIOS. Both may affect your OS Install though if you hve ever changed any settings.

Your board has a pcie x16 slot but depends on CPU whether it's 2.0 or 3.0. The card should work in both though.

He already did a CMOS clearing and it didn't help.

We are currently trying to figure out how to update the BIOS without an OS installed.

We got "Rufus" to setup a bootable USB stick but we are missing an ISO image of the BIOS

the .exe files from http://www.gigabyte.at/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4141#bios are not helping. We tried to convert the .zip file and the extracted files to an ISO image with the program "MagicISO" but after that rufus complains about not supported Startup / Compression files.

Do you know where we could possibly get ISO images from the BIOS versions?

thanks for your answers thus far

Nevermind -
we just formated the USB drive with Rufus into the FAT32 format and then copied the extracted BIOS files onto it.
it is installing currently

i will keep you updated if it works ! :)

We succesfully updated the BIOS to version F15.

We also set the Internal Graphics from "Auto" to "Enabled" so even if the new GPU is plugged in we still get a signal from the Internal Graphics (still no signal from the new GPU tho, but i am not sure if a driver is needed for that?)

I will let him install a new OS now and install drivers for the GPU and see if that works.

Also after flashing the BIOS we get a "Beep" sound while starting (with GPU plugged in) which we had got when the GPU was not plugged in but have NOT got when it was plugged in.
I don't really know what information that gives us, maybe you do :p

Yeah we tried the GPU of hi brother and it worked

2 questions:

If there is no OS installed and no drivers for the new GPU, should we be able to get a signal while booting up?
We do get one from the Internal but not from the GPU at the moment

Is there a "false" pcie slot? He has 2 on his mobo

First thing you need to do is disable integrated graphics, as they will automatically disable when using a GPU and may cause conflicts if enabled. If you have updated your BIOS and reset CMOS there isn't much else you can try as the card wont need drivers to display BIOS. What choices have you got under internal graphics?

Have you tried the card without a HDD attached? And uninstalled the old card's drivers?

i am sorry i didnt clear this up in the first place

there is currently no OS installed, so no elder drivers from the old GPU
in fact the hdd and a ssd is also new to the system but shouldnt be a problem since it is recognized in the bios as a boot option

we still struggle to get any signal from the GPU while booting (we boot nothing ofc but with integrated graphics we at least get a massage that says pls insert bootable device while gpu is just black monitor)

i am afraid that when we turn off integrated graphics we cannot acces the bios anymore or how does it work?
integrated graphics are currently "enabled"
other options are "disable" and "auto"

shouldnt there still be a signal from the GPU even if internal graphics are enabled?
i mean i thought it only depends on the dvi port we were using ?! (if we use dvi port from mobo its internal graphics and if we use dvi port from gpu its gpu or am i wrong?)

Its possible you'd have a display with integrated graphics enabled, but by default when you connect a discrete GPU it automatically disables it. Only one display adapter can be et as the primary boot display device.

No OS shouldnt be a problem, as only Windows needs drivers. Your BIOS don't.

Have you tried the other PCIe slot to see if it makes any difference? Or tried all outputs from the GPU? Does the GPU power up when attached? Any LED's or fans spinning? There should be an option somewhere to choose boot display adapter, and it should have options like PEG, PCIE, IGPU etc.
