Hi,
I Have a prebuilt pc that came with a ASRock 960gm-VGS3 FX and i would like to chagne it because it is causing overheating problems. I am thinking about upgrading to a MSI 970 gaming (Also the case and PSU), but i have an oem version of windows 8.1 with no codes keys or anything.
There are lots of threads I have read, some saying you can upgrade the mobo without reinstalling windows and others saying that it is impossible without buying a new key.
Do I have to buy a Windows Key or do i just have to phone MS and ask them for a new one? Is there anything I have to do before upgrading (deleting drivers and such)?
Any help is appreciated.

what have you done to address the overheating issues on what you got now ?? swapping out the board may not do nothing for that in any way ?

better case air flow ?? heck I got one cheap HP case I just removed the side panel ? better fans ? do you clean out the dust clogging the coolers / fans up ? still using the stock cooler on the cpu ?? fan rpm profiles high enough to do any good ..

I have replaced the cooler, the thermal paste, Taken the side pannels off, cleand out dust, installed an exhaust fan but it stays the same I have resorted to using a fan to blow air on to the motherboard and cpu, which gives much better performance. I had read or seen somewhere that the vrms on this motherboard are not cooled and this causes issues.

well the vrm's on any board are close to the same maybe at heat wise may have some fancy heat sinks on them from the factory but its just passave cooling and really how much good do they really do over just looks and a spot to put there logo's on ??

high ambient room air temps and poor fans case air flow

''I have resorted to using a fan to blow air on to the motherboard and cpu, which gives much better performance'' -- [don't think I never had to do this when the AC was down ]

I really don't think a board wioth a extra sink on the vrm's will do much good ?

lets see who else chimes in here on there opinion on that

The temprature in the room is actualy pretty cold i just use the fan because the pc sometimes gets to hot to touch. (on the top of the case)

well is the psu up there ?? it maybe getting hot ? then you know heat rises . what is your prebuilt ??? like a cyberpower ?? give details like model and all

this case I use her right now with a nice intel z 87 build in it I don't have the 2 side panels on it [antec sx 635 ]

The psu is bottom mounted
the pc isnt anything like a hp or dell it is by this small german company.

Cpu: Fx6300
Psu: 600w unknown (i have had problems with the psu in the past and it has been replaced one by the company as it melted a connector)
Gpu: r9 270x
Mobo: ASRock 960GM-VGS3 FX
cpu cooler: Cooler Master TX3
HDD: Seagate barracuda

''Psu: 600w unknown (i have had problems with the psu in the past and it has been replaced one by the company as it melted a connector)''

don't sound too trust worthy ??

''the pc isnt anything like a hp or dell it is by this small german company''

so anyway whats the company and model ???

I got this with a fx 6100 and a 7850 in a 35 dollar antec case I built up last year to use some parts I had around collecting dust . it don't get hot ?

Ive found out psu is lc-power LC600H-12 V2.31
the company is shinobee (but looking through their store i dont think they sell this model anymore)
and i think the model number is:10144800014090053

I guess if its a cheap psu and not able to supply stable power it could cause these issues ?? a part starving for power could run hotter then normal ??

I really don't see just changing the motherboard to be a real solution , but lets see who else answers here on there opinion
