Using my build as a workstation and a server at once

Hello there, recently I just found a website with so much ideas how a (home) server can be used and provide so much different tasks. In this discussion I would like to ask if it is possible to use a build which I am planning to build for lighter gaming (including the newer GTX 1050 ti) + especially for school as I am studying Computer Science and also using it as a server? Well servers need special hardware which is different as in normal computers but as a home server it could possibly run as I heard that any old computer can be used as a server which is the only efficient way how to use an older system. But the main question is would I be able to run the server and the os pararelly at the same time?

Solution
Shared folders instead of HomeGroup.
Right click on a folder and look into the options under Sharing...

If this server is simply a place to have shared files, it won't impact your gameplay.

This depends on what you want the 'server' to do.
People hear the word server, and think it needs to be something special. No it does not.

My 'house server' is also the HTPC. Runs on a low spec Pentium G840 and Win 10.
Music, video, backups for all the other systems, file share....

So what do you want YOUR 'server' to do?

Well I might do some experiments with it but I will probably use it in the same way as you so as a file server in my home LAN. The other thing I should ask is do I need any software or how should I set it up? I only know about using Homegroup to share my files but is that the same as a server? As I said I'm building myself a budget Mini ITX PC: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/KZwp3F would it run the "server" and the os with games on at the same time or would it slow down my performance rapidly? Thank you for sharing your experience.
