sim card reader for windows 8

I am trying to extract information from a sim card on my windows 8.1 desktop. The phone was destroyed. I have a sim card reader I bought on ebay, but from what I can tell, the drivers are for windows XP Service Pack 3. Do I need another reader, or just a driver for windows 8.1.

Clipboard is actually in memory and those addresses are most probably only text so when you save to clipboard you should open an empty text file and paste in it.
Messages are another problem, they are most probably saved in phone memory or it's memory card, not in the SIM.

I was trying to read the card from my desktop and it would not work. I decided to install the software on my laptop ( I installed every application on the disc ). Don't know if this was the right thing to do, but it is now reading the card. It uses Magicsim 9.0. All I can see on the SIM are contacts in the phonebook. I am looking for some messages which are very important. I don't see anything like that, but I am not familiar with how to run the program.
Also, I can't seem to copy the phonebook and save it.

Thanks for your efforts to try and help. I am just not very technologically experienced.

One more thing. Can I save the phonebook to my laptop? When I highlight the phonebook and select copy it says I can save it to the clipboard. I have no idea what the clipboard is. Is it on my laptop, is it on the sim card, was it on the phone which was destroyed?

Thanks for the information. I was more concerned with the texts, but since the phone has been damaged it doesn't look like I will be able to retrieve them. Thank you very much for your help.
