CPU / GPU Temps are Higher with Side Panel Fan

Hello,

I've been having my i5-3470 idle temp at 40°C and many others said it's perfectly fine and safe too.

Yet it was bugging me (load temps are fine), so I was gonna try a different thermal compound - Arctic MX-4, and now it's on the way too.

Today, I've removed the Side Panel Fan to clean dust from the dust filter and noticed a drop in temps immediately. Now CPU idle temp is between 36°C - 39°C and GPU idle temp dropped by 2°C too.

Previously, I had a i3-3210. We discussed Case Fan Positions here and tested possible case fan combinations, and ended up with current setup which scored me the lowest temps in idle and load at that time.

1. Front intake (Stock)
2. Side Panel intake (Stock)
3. Rear exhaust (CM JetFlo 120mm with Silent Adapter = 1200RPM)

But I didn't change or test them again after upgrading to i5-3470 though.

Is there any reason why temps are higher with Side Panel fan on after upgrading to i5?

The only thing I've changed is upgrading from i3 to i5, and from Intel stock cooler to this CPU cooler - Cooler Master X Dream i117

Thanks.

First of all, that upgraded cooler is not much better than the stock, so don't expect a huge drop in temps. I'd recommend getting at least a tower cooler with a 92mm fan. CoolerMaster has one that's good value for money, though I can't remember it's name. Also, I generally don't use side panel fans, because they can cause weird things and disrupt the case's front to back airflow. So I'd recommend you installing the side fan either to the front or bottom as an intake or to the top as an exhaust. That should make the temps better. Although if I were you, I wouldn't worry much about +-5°C.

I guess the obvious is that the cpu cooler you chose is not very great. As guanyu stated, grab a Hyper 212 EVO or something of that nature. Mine reduced my temps by 10 or 15 degrees. Also, with that side case fan, make sure you have the airflow pointed in the correct direction. I.E.: Make sure it is not blowing air into the case, and instead is pulling air away from the case. Sometimes these things happen, or i'd like to hope they do because i've done it a few times.

Thanks for the prompt responses, everyone :)

I've got this i5-3470 recently and had planned to purchase Hyper 212X cooler too. Since I had a new CM X Dream i117, thought I should give it a try first as I won't be overclocking anything. Also my ambient temp is 27°C too.

Just finished testing some case fan setups and moved the Side panel fan to Top (Rear) mount as an exhaust. Still the Side Panel fan mount is covered with dust filter though.

Now the idle CPU temp is 36°C and GPU is 35°C :) Previously, they were 40°C and 37°C.

Hope these are fine considering the ambient temp and current cooler?

As JustCallMeAllen mentioned, tested the side fan as a exhaust too. But it's just increased the CPU temp.

Actually, the Side panel fan was aiding to drop a few celsius when I had i3. But with i5 it isn't the case. May be i5 has more heat output even in idle and hot air might have trapped inside the case?

Honestly, idling anywhere around 40° C or less is perfectly normal unless you are running a water-cooled build. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If it really does bother you that it is running minimally hotter, then pick up a H50 water cooler or something like that.
