Hey there,

I am currently collecting parts for a new PC that will be primarily used for music production and maybe a little bit of gaming. I write heavier sort of stuff and use Cubase (will probably get 7 or 8 on this new PC) and use VST's for: amps, synths and drums. I was looking at an amd fx 8320 as it is half the price of I5/7's and i'm really trying to cut down on other components as i spent more than i thought i would for a GPU. But a friend of mine thinks the tech is a little out of date and i should opt for something newer as longevity is also a concern.

Doe's anyone think he is right and i should get something better- if so, any recommendations? Also accepting recommendations for RAM/ motherboards as from what i can tell they are all interrelated.
Thank you!

Your friend is right. AMD current chips are atleast a couple of generations older than Intel and hence not as powerful as current Intel chips. AMD is going to launch their newer range of chips in a couple of months though.
For the recommendation, we need your budget and location.

8 core amd or quad core intel min 2.6 with a 3.6 boost is fine. what you need to focus on is a good dsp that will handle your sessions. if youre doing one man stuff, anMbox is fine, a band may need something more capable like an 8-16 i/o unit, Cpu's and ram get taxed at high track counts. in my experience doing a full orchestral template with kontaKt will pretty much smash all your resources on an i7 macbook with 8gb ram unless your samples are on and external drive as well as your session files and audio.
