( sorry im a bit lost here) The thing is i have a gtx 960 and the vgtx 1070 only uses 30 more watts so surely it will be fine if i have enough power?

again it has not so much to do with power as with quality.
when you buy a car, you don't go to the car dealer and say "give me a car that can reach 150 miles per hour" and just buy the next best thing that has a tachometer that shows "150".
PSUs are the same. just because the PSU says it's 500W doesn't mean it can deliver it when you need it to, doesn't mean it can do so for many years, doesn't mean it can do so without burning your house down (worst case^^)

generally you'll probably be alright for a time. but it would be a shame if it's a low grade unit AKA a ticking time bomb and goes the way of the dodo when powering up the new system -- alongside your 1070

Hmmm ok thank you very much so just wonderign what would you do then would u still get the 1070? or a new psu

it really depends on your current PSU and budget.
500W is usually junk, but there are degrees in junk units ranging from "will just not power up anymore 2 years from now" to "will explode, take your whole rig with it and burn your house down". So it'd be best to check what PSU is actually used.
if it's a low grade PSU that's not potentially dangerous, like an EVGA 500b or a Corsair CX500, you will probably be able to power the system with it for a while (wouldn't overclock with it), though I strongly recommend buying a better quality unit as soon as possible, or replace it straight away.
if it's some really dangerous noname junkyard unit, I advice to replace immediately, no matter if you're powering your old 960 or the new 1070 as these units may be a hazard waiting to happen.

That setup uses about 300-350 watts under load, depending on other peripherals and whether you are overclocking. A 500w should be OK, but replace immediately if you experience any random shutoffs under load.
