Hi,

I don't know much about Building computers or compatibility issues . my current build was prebuilt and bought in 2012.

My current PC specs:

fan: Corsair Hydro Series H55 All-In-One Liquid Cooler for CPU

memory :16gb 4x4gb pc12800 ddr3/1600mhz quad channel memory

motherboard: asus p9x79 pro intel x79 chipset , 3 way sli/crossfire supported, 4 channel ddr3 atx mainboard w/ 8 ram slots, uefi bios, bt go, ssd caching, 7.1 hd audio , gblan, usb 3.0 , sata-111 raid , 4 gen3 pcie x 16 & 2 pcie x1 overclockable xxx

win 8

powersupply 850 watts

graphics - msi nvida hx194dpb gtx-980 geforce (upgraded from a gtx 680)

Tower Case

wanting to upgrade cpu to -

Intel Core i7 6800 K 3.40 GHz LGA2011 V3 15MB Cache High End Desktop Processor CPU - Black

If i did, would i have to buy a new motherboard ?

Solution
Yes you would need to change motherboard as the 6800k uses the LGA 2011-3 socket, not LGA 2011. You would also need new RAM as LGA 2011-3 motherboards only support DDR4.

However, the 3930k is already overkill for gaming, changing the CPU to a newer one will not give you any performance boost in games. If you want better performance in games, invest in a newer GPU (or a second 980 I guess).

Yup you need a new 2011v3 motherboard. Yours only supports 3000 and 4000 series. This is what you need to upgrade. this or sub in a 5820K for about $100 less.

As Mr. Kagouris said keep the cpu and upgrade your gpu. I also suggest get a bigger cpu cooler for some cpu overclocking. I still run an i7 3820 which i have running at 4.3Ghz pair with an OC'd 980Ti and they run great together. I wouldn't think twice about dropping in a 2nd 980Ti or a single 1080.

Hi, i was try reply but i click best solution by mistake.

I was going ask about Overheating Like you mentioned, My PC overheats when in game, Graphics and CPU both at 60c,
When in game

You mentioned a Bigger CPU Cooler , which one would you recommend to use, ?

I have the Liquid Cooler Corsair Hydro Series H55 All-In-One Liquid Cooler for CPU , which connects to a fan on back of case , and one single fan on top which came with the build.

I unselected that.

60°C is not overheating on either. The H55 is fine for the cpu at stock clocks but if you start overclocking it will become inadequate fairly quickly. I suggest a 240mm(or larger aio) or a big air cooler like the Noctua D15 or the Cryorig R1.

I was mainly looking to upgrade CPU for better performance in games, but if doing so wouldn't make much difference,
i guess i will look at newer graphics card or second Gtx 980, with new cooling system like bignastyid mentioned .

Thanks all for suggestions.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully i can get back some money from the 980, as the 1080 card is very expensive.
