Only Half My RAM Is Showing In UEFI/BIOS

I have an Asus X99-E-10G WS Motherboard: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/X99-E-10G-WS/specifications/

I have the latest BIOS version. My RAM is G.Skill TridentZ 32GB (I asked G.Skill and they said it would work with my motherboard). I have them installed just like the motherboard manual said to in the same 4 slots. I just booted this computer for the first time and it only shows 16 gigs. I also ran the MemOk feature by pressing its button on the board. It still thinks I just have 16 gigs.

Please help if you can. It was such a pain doing this build. I really hope I don't have to RMA the board.

Thank you.

Solution

Fixed it! Now I'm wondering if my original TridentZ RAM would work but I don't want to touch it lol. I checked for bent pins (None) and reseated the CPU. That did the trick. Separating the CPU cooler (h100i v2) from the CPU and rejoining them without applying new thermal paste has brought my CPU temp up a bit (36c-37c from 30c-32c) but as I understand it, those temps are fine for broadwell-e so I'll leave it for now until I overclock the CPU.

Thanks everyone for the help. Did anyone else say reseat CPU? That was the answer so I'll mark this if I don't read up and see it in another post.

Answer: Always check socket pins and reseat CPU.
Did you try clearing CMOS via jumper pins? Sometimes a battery removal reset wont be enough.

And I know this sounds obvious, but have you double checked the RAM is inserted properly? Try one stick at a time to see if both work independently.

I just tried each one and each one worked except one. So then I put all the rest in and rather than having 24gigs I still have 16. So now I have 3 sticks in at 8GB each but still showing 16 total.

Your second post Drgreer.

Welcome back!

When you bought the ram are the two 8 Gb matched pair of kits the same.
In respect to the speed quoted on them that they run at, and also the latency timing values and voltage of each two pair kit of 8 Gb sticks.

If the answer is yes.

Just as a test go into the bios of your motherboard, and the section that deals with memory.
Check that the speed is set correctly.

That Xmp mode is enabled, or the Intel Xmp 2.0 mode is.
If the memory states on it, it is Ecc capable in anyway the option for Ecc type memory must be set to be enabled.

Then there should be a section where you can check what timing values the bios also auto setup for the memory.
Make sure if there is an option of memory hole remapping it is also set to enabled in the bios.
And last of all you should be able to check that the voltage for the memory set in the bios is set to the right voltage the memory sticks state.

Ok so save all the changes before you exit the bios.
And let your system re start.
See if the memory is detected and reported as 32Gb.

If it still fails to detect the full 32Gb.
Go back into the bios and for the memory speed, select a lower value of memory speed by about 200Mhz.
Again save the changes before you exit the bios.
And then see if more than 16Gb of memory is detected by the motherboard then.

lol I just got 3 sticks to show up by moving one to another slot which doesn't make sense because the slot it was in worked for a different stick before. idk what to think. i just want my quad channel :(

It's a 32GB kit. I'll do those things. thanks.

I put all 4 sticks back in the slots the mobo manual says to. I turned on XMP on the motherboard and in efi. It's not ECC ram. It's G.Skill Tridenz 3200. I believe it's supposed to be at 1.35v. It won't let me change that from the Auto setting for some reason. I don't see memory hole remapping anywhere. Still only showing 16gb.

Here it is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232317 . It keeps showing up as base clock. I have the over voltage CPU jumper set on the motherboard. This RAM isn't on the recommended list from Asus but I thought it said it works for x99 and I asked on newegg about my motherboard.

I guess I should try another RAM kit. If the cpu pins are bent I'm going to be so angry. I sat the CPU perfectly. It's nearly impossible to mess that up. You carefully seat it and pull a lever. I heard Asus won't take an RMA if the pins are bent. I really hope it's the RAM I'm trying to use.

I tried to use the easy overclock stuff. When I did that I got the CPU to overclock but not the RAM. The RAM is at base clock. I'm not experienced in overclocking. I just want all my RAM sticks to show first. That should be the case right? All my RAM shows and then I overclock it. I had to run MemOK (Meant to be used for RAM compatibility issues) each time I rearranged the RAM. It's like without using MemOk it doesn't want to take the RAM at all and with MemOk it will only see half. I posted a related thread where I'm really freaking out about pins because I'd like a specific answer to that question as well: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3232087/pins-bent-memory-controller-broken.html

MERGED QUESTION
Question from DrGreer : "Does This Mean My Pins Are Bent Or Memory Controller Broken?"

I have an asus board with memory that is not on the list, and it's a pain, the first dozen boots no dice, then it just settled down. Have you tried just repeatedly hitting the mem ok button (it performs a self test at various speeds and tries to get something that will work).

https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/X99-E-10G-WS/ suggests (1/2 way down) that the slots are prioritised, try getting a pair working in the 1st priority slots and then the 2nd pair in the 2nd priority slots etc.

Can you set the ram to the slowest speed in bios and see what happens? if good then increase to the next etc.

It wouldn't be bad that I have 2 CPU power slots plugged in would it? There are two above the CPU and one below it. I had two CPU power cords that came with my PSU so I plugged both in above the CPU and then moved the voltage jumper over as it said in the manual to do if I wanted my CPU to be able to get extra voltage.

As for the RAM slots, I the manual shows for 4 sticks to put them in as A1 B1 D1 C1 which starts second from the left and skips one across the slots each time so there's an empty slot before and after each stick.

I just tried a few different arrangements. One I tried made the motherboard give me a 53 error which means incompatible memory or some such. Then I put 2 on the grey slots and 2 on the black slots and it only showed 8GB after going to BIOS and then after MemOK

This is killing my brain. If the pins are bent I'm screwed. I can't replace a $650 motherboard and Asus wont so then I'll have to try to fix the pins but Asus sockets have tons of tinier pins compared to normal sockets. I really hope it's not that. I ordered the other RAM but it won't be here till Monday I'm guessing since it's Friday and I got next day fedex. If I can get it to register 16 gigs again is it safe to run it while I wait? idk. If it turns out to be the pins what do I do?

I've done that a few times now. Just tried again and no dice. I now have the ram back to what the manual says and it's showing 16 gigs with a1 and c1 working (The two furthest out). Could it be the CPU power cables? I have 3 CPU power slots on my motherboard, 2 above the CPU and one below. My PSU came with 2 CPU cords so I plugged in the 2 at the top, leaving the one below open. Idk if there's some special arrangement for those. It doesn't say in the manual. I also have an extra VGA power cable that looks like it could fit the third CPU power slot if I had to. Not sure if that would be a bad thing to do though.

Update: After just hitting the CMOS button I got 24 gigs to show but when I tried to go into the BIOS menu it froze. This is what happens each time I get it to show 24 gigs (It freezes if I try to go into BIOS/EFI menu)
