Egpu new? idea

I have been looking at the idea of adding an egpu to my laptop. I have a toshiba satellite model number s55-c5274. Every setup i have seen has three components, power supply, graphics card, and the egpu dock. so you start with something like this

then you add a video card and power supply. i'm sure youre all familiar with the setup.
however, as far as i can tell, the item listed above is just a pcix16 to pcix1 adaptor, correct? if so..... why not just get

and be all done? This seems like WAY too simple of a solution, so i am posting on here to ask what i am mising?

you are missing the fact that laptops do not have the same pcie slots that discreet gpu's need


there must be a middle man converting the laptop's slot type to the gpu's pcie slot type



also, doing this is not worth the hassle

why wouldnt adding a gpu to my apready powerful laptop be 'worth the hassle'? currently i am able to play the game that i want (star citizen) as is, but with a low framerate. i'm looking to boost my fps from 8 to maybe 30. this seems like the best solution. what is your better idea?

Your dumping several hundred dollars (GPU+PSU+eGPU dock, that cable wont work it clearly states its an express card, not an x1 riser) into a platform not meant to handle it.
Not only would the processor likely be too weak to really hold its own with a discrete GPU, you are also running it on a very limited bandwidth.

eGPUs have never been worth the money, likely never will fully.

i do not expect to get the full power from the graphics card. ive got an Intel Core i7-5500U. i think thats plenty powerful.... its either 200 for the egpu setup, or over a grand for a setup with the same cpu, ram, hard drive display. seems like i would like to spend 200 for + 20fps. even if i get only 1/4 the processing power from the graphics card on the egpu, thats all i need. I dont mean to argue, i have never tried actually doing this, it sounds like maybe you have, and have therefor seen first hand what to expect. it just seems to me that its the best/cheapest way to give my current system a small boost.

The other issue is how are you planning to hook the GPU up to the laptop? AFAIK there are no acceptable ports to use.
If you want solid gaming performance, dont expect it from a laptop.

That laptop was also a ripoff anyway, for the same price my laptop has an 5500U with a 940m, with a 1080p screen.

there is a port..... just the wifi is using it. i never said what i paid for the laptop...Either way, me getting ripped off previously, or your setup being better than mine isnt really what i was looking for, i'm not looking for a solid gaming machine, just looking for a bump in the graphics

I have the same laptop,did you do the egpu??
it seems the wifi card slot is a m.2 key e..
