Is this CPU enough to handle GTX 1080 or upgrade as getting lower then normal FPS compared to benchmarks

Hey there my rig right now is

Asus PG279Q
Gtx 1080
i7 4790 (non K)
12 GB Ram
Old motherboard

I am currently playing BF1 and noticing that my rough fps is about 90 compared to benchmarks which is about 110. After playing for about a hour it then drops to about 80 and then I can notice it lag a bit and I have to restart the game or PC to go back to 90 and repeat. The temps are fine as I monitor it but the CPU usage tends to get very high sometimes hitting 100%. Normally stays between 80 and 100. Is there anything I can do to help my fps and usage out or will I have to upgrade to a 6700k

Thanks :)

i'm running an i7 4790 with gtx 1070, and im averaging at 105 fps with spikes to 139 fps at bf1, though I don't get those drops you mentioned, it could be your temps?

Battlefield 1 is very cpu heavy, but the i7 4790 is still very capable and wont bottleneck a gtx 1080, upgrading to an i7 6700k, will not give you any more performance in bf1 unless you OC it. But then it's debatable if it's worth the price, which it's not ;)

So for now, don't upgrade, the i7 4790 is fine for a gtx 1080, just wait till they release an update with bug fixes etc and see how it, does then. Also check your temps.

You shouldn't need to upgrade as the i7-4790 is still a very capable CPU. It's still a new game and will have some minor issues affecting FPS until they roll out some patches. For now you can lower settings/turn of AA which should help keep the FPS a bit steadier. Besides BF1 are your other games running smooth?

*EDIT: You say it stays between 80-100, are you talking about temp or FPS?

BF1 is CPU Demanding, and swapping to a 6600k or a 6700k wont really do much. That being said I am running 2 GTX 770 4GB in SLI without any issues at 1920x1200 at either high or ultra, with a 4770k clocked to a mere 4Ghz, Granted your resolution is 1440p.

What is your GPU CPU and RAM usage while gaming?

GPU is 90-99%
Cpu is 80-99%
Ram usage is about 7600

The temps are between 70 and 80 degrees
