I have a Buffalo HD-CE500U2-EU External Hard drive which has stopped working. I suspect the problem at least in part is to do with the motor drive mechanism because the green light comes on for a short while about 6 seconds, then goes off. I can hear the motor start for this time and then stops. It i several years old now and so there is no guarantee, how can I remove the cover to see if there is anything obvious?
I have a lot of things on the HD which I would like to access. Do you have any suggestions Please?

Welcome to the TH Community, Carey!

I'd strongly recommend you try to resolve the issue by plugging the external HDD using a different USB cable and another USB port on your computer. Moreover, if you have access to another PC/laptop, try accessing your data on the ext. drive from there as well. It sounds like there might be a problem in the power supply to the drive itself. I'd not advise you to take the HDD out of the enclosure just yet, make sure it's not covered by the warranty.
I'd also advise you to backup all your data from it as soon as you can access it. Having only one copy of your files stored on an external HDD is not a backup solution, unless you have a duplicate of those files stored on a different storage device/drive...

If you manage to get it powered up long enough after the USB cable swap, check how it is recognized in Disk Management in Windows. Posting some screenshots from there would be really helpful to us. Another thing you should consider doing is running an HDD-specific diagnostic utility to determine the health and SMART status of the external drive.

Keep us posted with the troubleshooting!
