I mainly deal with graphics so im not so good in networking and servers, etc.
I have a low power 4 core celeron integrated on a mobo (asrock i think)
I need a home server with the functions below.
Is it okay to use it or i need an other machine (for example: NAS + other pc).

I would like to use at home and remotely from a distance:
- store data (pics, info, etc.)
- torrent
- backup images

I would like to use it as a desktop for my tv too:
- watch movies, maybe stream it
- browsing (chrome, firefox)
- word processing/pdf viewing

Thank you for your help!

Here is explanation for this:

What makes a box a server is simply the software that's running on it. So as mentioned, all you have to do to convert a desktop into a server is to run the proper "serving" software. True, enterprise-use servers is probably running a server-specific$$ OS and it comes with lots of management and built-in tools, intended to service hundreds and thousands of users with the proper security (i.e.: warehouse employees not suppose to access a payroll data), but am guessing you are not servicing these clients.

In an enterprise, they use dedicated servers, because...

Sorry, heres the setup:

Mobo: ASRock J3455
Processor: Onboard: quad core, 2.3 ghz
Graphics: onboard, integrated
Ram: 2*4 gb Kingston DIMM DDR3 1600 mhz
Available HDDs: 2*1 TB WD RED (RAID)
SSD: 120gb Samsung Evo

So if its enough, how to solve to work as a server and a desktop same time. Just outline the solution, i can tinker with and find the exact method.

Across the net. Sorry, I don't know the exact phrase because im not a native english speaker.

So right on top, your transfer speed will be limited by how much Internet you can buy.

Your usage is not super-heavy and looks like the 4-core J3455 is on pair with a 2-core I3 (my base comparison) so I say you are OK there.

So all you have to do to run those "server" services is to load the software and BAM!

As a desktop for your TV, job#1 is, hookup a HDMI cable, and you decide on what kind of interfacing you want on this desktop.

Once you have everything working locally, within the LAN, to enable Internet access you need to establish a VPN connection between your remote client and the server. I believe these days VPN is built into Windows.

So my hardware is enough, and i know my speed is limited by my net.

So can i run this pc to be a server and a desktop at the same time? Maybe a nas and a desktop?
(Im so confused, coz at work there are dedicated servers for everything.)

Thanks for your quick answer!

In an enterprise, they use dedicated servers, because again, they service hundreds/thousands people, you are not.

Now your box (any box) has a fixed, max bandwidth. Lets say your family is playing a movie on the "server" to TV, and it takes up 30% of that bandwidth. You then decide to run a desktop video encoding session, this heavy task immediately takes up all available bandwidth and the people watching the movie is gonna see stuttering and buffering and shouting at you what's wrong. So you ask whether server/desktop can be on one box, sure, it will do both jobs, but how well, it depends what you are doing and how critical (people watching movies don't want pauses unless intentional) are the tasks.

I see and thanks the help again.

Let me describe my system.

Theres a xenon based pc for my needs if i work at home. Its wired to a router which connected to a modem. The router is for security and other issues. If i need files located my home i have to wake that pc up and dl those file. Or torrenting those files. Or cloud that.
Sadly my upload speed limited by my internet service badly.

For my tv needs there is the system i have described previously connected with my TV. This runs a win10 and can stream the movie for tablets. (Friend tinkered it). Its directly connected to the modem.

I would like to use that to reach my potential files, upload my files, or torrent it, so not any calculating functions. I would like this as a server because my desktop system eats up soooo much electricity and i want to be more green and eco friendly. And i would like a 24/7 solution also. Thats why i buildt 2 hdds (will be more, my mobo has 5 SATAs i think)

So as you said, if its enough for these functions working the same time: torrent, upload and TV thats would be great. Some rare/occasional lag not a problem i think.

Thanks for your quick answers again!
