Status: UNRESOLVED
Computer Type: Desktop
GPU: MSI Radeon R9 380 4GB Video Card 8GB
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
RAM: Provide the model number, quantity, and overclock information if applicable.
PSU: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Operating System & Version: Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
GPU Drivers: Crimson Edition 16.11.2 Hotfix
Chipset Drivers: N/A
Background Applications: N/A
Description of Problem: So I came home today and tried to turn on my PC from hibernate but it doesn't respond, prompting me to use the power button. Everything seems slightly slower but no red flags rose on my part. Then I decide to play games and experience huge fps drops (from 350+ down to ~50).

Troubleshooting: I’ve diagnosed the RAM which seems to work fine and it all points to the GPU being the problem. I tried reinstalling drivers CLEANLY using DDU and tested it out with FurMark but to no avail. Are there any other possible solutions? I wish to know if I can salvage the video card before I scrap it.
Here is the FurMark test I did.

Here's the link to what appears on dxdiag. I just don't understand how my PC detects no problems with the video card but there's such a significant drop in performance. http://imgur.com/a/gHNYy

Solution

It would be good to remove software from the possible cause for sure. Give it a try.

I've SMART checked my drives and scanned my computer while reinstalling the drivers right after. The problem persists. Also, I've noticed other FurMark scores for my graphics card and my score doesn't hold a candle to them.

For example: http://www.ozone3d.net/gpudb/score.php?which=186749

You cant compare those as this one is from a much older version at a 1080p. Yours is on 720p. Try running a game and hit the windows key. The hit ctrl alt delete and bring up process. See if any other programs are taking CPU performance.

Nothing spikes out of the ordinary. CPU Usage sits around 18% according to the task manager graph despite the game running at 20 fps max.

Are there any other tricks I can try? I'm time-constrained and need the GPU fixed asap for 3D modelling.

I also like to point out that my computer's performance overall has been much more sluggish ever since this video card problem surfaced (Browsing, Windows Explorer, watching videos/streams etc.) Are these symptoms of software/hardware defects? Would a total reformatting of my hard drives be worth trying?

I have no idea how but after reformatting the computer, the video card started working again. If it was a software issue, I'm puzzled as to how clean-uninstalling and reinstalling my amd drivers didn't solve the problem.
