Hardwire to router is roughly half speed to Internet

Hey all,

I need to lean on your networking expertise. For some time now I have been thinking about upgrading my home network as it seems slower than I would expect. I did some testing this morning and can confirm that suspicion. I tested my laptop hardwired to the modem and then the same test hardwired to the router that is hardwired to the modem.

These were the results:
1) Direct to modem: 177.97 Mbps down
2) Direct to router: 81.52 Mbps down
3) Wi-Fi to router: 35.89 Mbps (5Ghz in the same room as the router)

What I can't figure out is why the router is slowing down the direct connection to the modem. I know I have several devices connected to the router but looking at the activity on the router there is no other device that is using bandwidth. I've tried several router settings but can't seem to get past the ~80 Mbps peak download speed.

My H/W is:
Arris 6190 Modem running 9.1.93N firmware
Nighthawk X6 R8000 router running V1.0.3.4_1.1.2 firmware

Any ideas what I can try to obtain the extra bandwidth? Any info is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey all,

It looks like the solution was in front of my face the whole time. I was going through each setting on the router and saw that the router was set to "Let Speedtest detect my Internet bandwidth". I changed that to "I want to define my Internet Bandwidth" and set my download to 195 Mbps and my upload to 100 Mbps. That's it. Problem solved.

New speed tests:
1) Direct to router: 179.68 Mbps down
2) Wi-Fi to router: 125.58 Mbps (5Ghz w/med-high signal strength from another room)

Quite the difference.

Start with a factory reset of the router. Just to have a consistent starting point. Swap the cable from the modem to router with a new cat5e/cat6 cable to eliminate that. Verify with the ethernet port LEDs that you have a gigabit connection between the router and modem. Until you have that you won't get above 90mbit.
