Is the AMD A10-7850K good for modern gaming

I'm building my first PC and I want a cheap CPU that can handle games like Battlefield 1 or Overwatch. Is it strong enough to handle them on Medium or High settings? I will be using the XFX Radeon Rx 460 as my GPU.

Solution
Do not buy an APU if you don't intend to use its discrete graphics. The 7850K is the same CPU as is found in the much cheaper Athlon x4 860K, the Athlon is just cheaper because the integraged graphics are disabled.

That said, at the same price the i3 6100 is a far faster and more potent CPU. AMD's socket FM2+ is generally a poor choice today.

EDIT: nVidia's GTX 1050 also appears to be a better value than the RX 460. AMD needs to cut prices on it to be competitive.

But is it good enough for modern games?

Depends on the game. Some will not run very well on AMD's APUs because of terrible single-threaded performance - it's in the ballpark of CPUs Intel was selling in 2007. Battlefield will run much more poorly than on the i3 + GTX 1050, which happens to be priced about the same. Why you would want to pay the same (or more) for a worse CPU is beyond me.

Is there any good FM2+ CPUs under $250? The reason I want to use one is because a friend had a given me a FM2+ motherboard.

sell it

if you REALLY want to keep it get an athlon x4

an apu is a waste of money when you are going to get a dedicated gpu

you are going to notice drops and hitching though, so dont expect smooth gameplay

Can the I3 handle Battlefield 1

Much better than the AMD A10-7850K/Athlon X4 870K. Plus you will have the option for future upgrade to i5/i7. Intel is a much better choice right now.

Why is it that every time someone asks wheter a hardware will be sufficient for a given task, the automated answer is get an i3-6100 instead! AMD is comparable to Intel from 2007!

Get real folks. The intel is over $110 while the AMD is $67. My jaw dropped especially when the OP said that he already had an FM2 motherboard and some wiseguy advised him to sell it. Do you also think that his budget will appear out of nowhere or he will be able to pick some $$$ from trees?

I hate it when someone is clearly looking for a budget around $100 and you advise them that they should spend $220 and get a CPU and a crap motherboard that he will not be able to use if he decides to upgrade CPU or GPU unless he gets a $100+ decent one AS WELL AS fork out more money for the 1050. GOOD JOB. 11/10 suggestion.

For the matter at hand, yes you will be able to play whatever you want and be GPU limited whatever you try to do. Just get the 860K and save $30, its pointless to get an APU if you already have a discrete graphics card. If you have not purchased your card yet and your whole budget is around $100 however, you can get an APU and call it a day. BF1 runs but is not enjoyable. Games like OW or CS:GO or Mobas in general are less demanding so its generally for those.

the a10 7850k costs around the same as the much better i3 6100

the free mobo he got, when sold, would give him enough money for a nice mobo for that i3

they start at way under $100, i dunno what you smoking

The option is to get the X4 860K vs i5 6100, which is $40 cheaper than the Intel. And decent Intel motherboards which are actually worth as an upgrade path over an i5-6100 start at around $100 (he has to get at least H170 board with good VRMs). For the current case, selling that FM2 board will get him how much? $20? $30? How much extra for DDR4? What would be the FPS difference when used with an RX 460?

At this point, spending $67 or less for an X4 860K is much more preferable than i3+mobo combo, because he already has the motherboard. That is budget SSD money, not to mention being more than enough for an RX 460. That CPU is even in the recommended list of this forum at that price point.

Just get the AMD, its a good match for that GPU for dirt cheap. If you want to build a proper gaming PC down the road, the least I would recommend is a quad core i5 with a decent motherboard, not that 2 core HT crap with the cheapest board you can find.
