I am not sure how to enable the front panel audio.

There's details in the manual about the nine pin onboard connector and talk about if you've got an AC'97 audio panel which I don't understand.

Would that be some kind of audio panel you can buy separately and fasten into your pc box when you're building a machine?

And does that mean there's some other kind?

And what's this other stuff I read in the manual about needing an HD front panel audio module? That's in order to enable 7.1 channel audio. Who needs 7.1 channels, I mean, what's 0.1 of a channel?

Right now I would just like my earphones to work. I plug them into the speaker plug at the back and they work but too faint. And the software doesn't offer any way to reconfigure for earphones - if that would make any difference.

Just would like the quickest simplest fix, for starters.

So what sort of connector do I need to get for that onboard connector?

And what other things should I get to know about in this respect?

:)

There are two ways to connect to it HD Audio and AC97. Difference is that HD audio has device sensing and plug sensing while Ac97 doesn't. Ac 97 plugs have a part that has a switch that can disconnect rear speakers and is therefore recommended. You can tell if it's HD if all the wires are connected to pins on MB, AC97 has 2 less. You would need a module to either one to put in the case, usually instead of 3.5" or 5.25" case bays...
Check the manual for your MB, there should be a front audio connector on it. Your case has to have front sound connectors to connect to that port. Connecting to the front is not going to give you stronger sound, it's all connected to same sound circuit.
Your MB has "7.1 CH HD Audio (Realtek ALC887 Audio Codec)" so you need appropriate drivers for your Windows version. Once you install drivers, you will get a "Realtek HD Audio" panel in Control panel where you can adjust all parameters for sound.
0.1 in 2.1, 5.1 and 7.1 is for bass or woofer speaker (black connector on outputs).

My case does not have front sound connectors to connect to that port. That's what I'm asking about.

I will have to provide them. What do I provide?

There is a front audio connector on the motherboard. That's what I mentioned: the nine pin onboard connector.

I perhaps don't put my questions too well. I want to know how to make a connection to that onboard connector.

No 16 in this diagram is it.
