I think you should consider it.
its up to you how to justify spending 500-1000.
if you just play games an hour a day every other day, I think its wise not to. Then again it depends on your flow.
If u have $1000 to work with then I would say its a good investment.
you dont need to get the latest gear. but u want to get something that isnt going to cause you compatibility problems. you can play new games on old hardware. but your`s is fading fast.
I had the q9300 for 7 years and worked great. I sold my cpu and mobo for cheap about $50-75 CAD. So maybe best to just look for the higher Q's and if you see an extreme grab that.. hehe
I know you posted for a 775 cpu but if I may...
Whats the reason to get a 775? Is it because you find your rig slow and want upgrade?
Are you planning on getting anything else? How long you plan on keeping it until you can get a new up to date rig?
What games do you plan on playing and what settings if that mattered?
My opinion is to have the option of buying a used later generation system what ever you can budget.
No matter what you do to that 775 rig, it'll most likely bottleneck itself in every way and you end up losing time and money for just maybe a few % in increased performance.
Better if you post more info to give it more depth than just asking which cpu upgrade you should get. If thats all you want then you could find it on google really..

So do you think that I should just invest in a new rig? If so what parts can i buy first? I'm thinking of buying a graphics card first and then the rest later if I have the budget already.

Alright! Thanks for the help man! I'll just be saving towards the end of the year for a build
What would be your budget for the build? If you have $500+ to spend you can get a decent latest gen build. If you currently have a small budget, getting a Q9XXX etc is a good very cheap option, thought it wouldnt be suitable for powerful cards.

no problem.
just remember its your computer and your decision.
you have to justify the spending.
also it would be wise to post your build before you buy it and have people look at it and get feedback.
but that being said, trust the ones that are verified owned over ones that just reflection from what they see/hear and not had actual experience with.
