I wont be getting a sata drive as I will be switching my m.2 500gb ssd to a laptop when I leave for a month long vacation.

Now we got that out of the way, will my motherboard bottleneck the 850 evo m.2 at all? On MSI's website it says the z97 Gaming 5 boasts a "1x 2280 Key M(PCIe Gen2 x2/SATA)" m.2 slot.

After some googling I've found that pciex2 can affect its speed and a pciex4 on newer generation chipset mobo are better so I just wanted to make sure if its worth the purchase. If it will in fact bottleneck the m2 ssd by any significant margain I might just spring for a cheaper option or not at all and keep the 128 gb ssd on my laptop

from puget systems

M.2 Drive Throughput by Connection Theoretical Maximum Throughput Est. Real-World Maximum Throughput
SATA III 6.0 Gb/s (750 MB/s) 4.8 Gb/s (600 MB/s)
PCI-E 2.0 x2 8 Gb/s (1 GB/s) 6.4 Gb/s (800 MB/s)
PCI-E 2.0 x4 16 Gb/s (2 GB/s) 12.8 Gb/s (1.6 GB/s)
PCI-E 3.0 x4 32 Gb/s (4 GB/s) 31.5 Gb/s (3.9 GB/s)

just ever so slighty better than Sata 3

sorry for my ignorance but will PCIEx2 bottleneck the ssd in anyway? If i did get it should I move the OS from my 850 evo sata drive to the new m.2 drive?

No,the ssd controller is the one.You are not limited in anyway whatsoever.I recommend comparing iops rather than bus speeds
