Hello everyone!

I am in the market for a mechanical keyboard. I am going to use it for both work and gaming.

I have a strict budget of £100($124/€112, so it can be anything under but not a penny over). I know this might sound obvious but this also means that the keyboard has to be available to buy here in the UK.

I've been doing a bit of reading and I think that I would want a keyboard with either a Cherry switch or a Razer switch.

I know that Corsair, Razer, Steelseries and even Cherry do those keyboards so I am trying to stick to the more reputable brands (like the aforementioned ones).

With that being said, what keyboards would you recommend that would fit my requirements?

Please reply soon.

Kind regards,
Adi from London, UK

The search is over. After much deliberation, I ended up going with the Logitech G610 Orion Brown. The Corsair Strafe was a good keyboard and had nice red backlighting but the keys seemed to jut out a little more than the Logitech one.

Additionally I know that Logitech make good keyboards so I can relax knowing that Logitech is brand that I can trust.

If anyone is interested I will write back with my opinion in terms of what my experience was like using it.

Edit: I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their suggestions/recommendations

The first step is figuring out exactly what switch you want. For example: the Cherry MX switches come in red, black, blue, brown, green, etc. Brown seem to considered the one people use for both gaming and typing. Only after you've settled on a switch type can you shop for a keyboard. There are company's that sell knockoffs of the Cherry switches that tend to be less expensive than their Cherry MX counterpart. I would suggest looking at keyboards with Kailh switches (Chinese knockoff of the German made Cherry MX).

I was having a look at a buyers guide and I am thinking it's either going to be a cherry MX Brown or a Cherry MX Red Switch(as those might be good for what I am doing). In an ideal world I will want a switch that does not require too much effort to press down which is why I chose these switches.

Just as an update, I have been doing some searching around and it's definitely a toss up between either a Cherry MX Red or Brown switch. I have found a few candidates already and they are as follows :
Corsair K70 Lux Blue
SteelSeries Apex M500
Corsair Strafe MX Red
Corsair Strafe MX Brown
HyperX Alloy FPS
ASUS Strix Tactic Pro Gaming Keyboard
Logitech G610

I can say the Corsair Strafe MX red keyboard is great, I am typing on it right now. It makes great sound, and is very comfortable to type on. Corsair keyboards are built like tanks and just work. -PCth

Hey PCtryhard, are they durable? One thing I will also need from my keyboard is something that is going to last me a long time. Long story short it needs to be durable.

I should also mention that I was asking around on Reddit as well and someone said that Corsair and Steelseries are not reputable brands.

The person that said this mentioned these other companies that (in their opinion):
CoolerMaster, Deck, Ducky, Filco, KB Paradise, KUL, Leopold, WASD, and Varmilo.

The only two brands that I have heard of in there are CoolerMaster and Filco.

Yes, as I mentioned before, they are built like tanks. I am not sure who said they were not reputable, he must have got some lemons or something. Corsairs should last you a long time, mine is build out of highly durable polymer and metal. Unless you use it as a hammer, it could easily last you years.

The only thing that he mentioned was that Corsair (amongst the other brands in my candidate list) are allegedly hard to find replacement keys for. With that being said, I have taken good care of all the keyboards that I have used over the years. So that comment bares no substance.

He also mentioned that they are overpriced and only last 5 years(which ties into what I said above). If that's the case, I think that keeps the strafe firmly in the mix.

Update: I have been doing some reading around and I've heard that whilst Cherry MX red switches have linear switches. Brown switches have a tactile bump (to let me know that they have been pressed).

Red switches do provide that feedback but that does not happen unless if you press the key all the way down. That's not ideal for me. As such I think a keyboard with a Cherry MX Brown switch would be the way to go for me.

If you do as much (or more) typing as you do gaming, browns are probably better. I would try them in person if you can. -PCth

PCtryHard: If only it was that easy! Cooler Master also do a keyboard called Masterkeys. It's scored some good reviews and has the 10 key keypad (which is yet another requirement). As it stands we have:

Cooler Master Master Keys Pro L
Logitech G610
Corsair Strafe

All of them are good keyboards and have roughly the same scores in the reviews, so we are getting closer.
