So I have a particular instance of svchost.exe with CPU utilization spikes averaging from 0% to 18%. I noticed the problem yesterday I loaded Process Explorer and I sat there and waited for a few minutes taking in all the numbers and I quickly noticed a continual CPU spike from one of the Svchost instances I double clicked on it and looked at the individual threads and noticed that Windows Update was chewing up CPU like it was the end of the world so I temporarily disabled the Windows Update service. Now I noticed that DNScache service is spiking roughly every two to three minutes.
I verified the integrity of the OS files and SFC found no faults, and the system as far as I can tell from scans and observing it is free of malware. I looked at my hosts files and noticed they are 441 KB in size I don't know how big host files should be. So my question is before I do anything with DNScache what is the first thing I should do? I was gonna restart the service but I figured I'd check in first.
