System Unstable when CPU not stressed

Hello all,

I was hoping someone could help me.

My computer starts to get really unstable with tons of visual artifacts and crashing programs when the CPU isn't stressed. It started a month ago, and at first I thought it was video card (so I tried a different GPU/onboard which didn't help) or software related, so I ran furmark or stablize it. I had a little bit of time so I reinstalled Windows 10 but it was going berserk during the install (at the windows boot even). I barely managed to get it to install (crashed like 10 times before I could and quickly install prime95 to stablize then finish).

If I set the power settings minimum processor state to 80-100% it's stable, anything below that it starts to crap out. I'm not overclocked and everything is in default.cpu

I just built this system a little while ago and I'm trying to figure out which is the main culprit to RMA it. I'm leaning towards CPU or Mobo.

CPU: i7 6700km Nocta NH-U14S
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z 8GB x 2 (tried each individually solo didn't help)
Mobo: Asus Maximus Ranger VIII
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1070
SSD: Sandisk Extreme II
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2

Any chance you have AI Suite II? If so uninstall it and test.

If you have an SSD, make sure the following are up to date:

  • SSD firmware
    BIOS Version
    Chipset Drivers
    Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, I tried that as well, and am currently running the latest BIOS

Thanks again. I tested the SSD with the Sandisk program with no errors. I had the same issues with the IGP and removed the my 1070 so I don't think it's that. So it's most likely my PSU rather than my motherboard or CPU?

Wow, so I got around to try a different motherboard as I was pretty sure that would be the culprit and it's still doing it. I'm pretty peeved, probably CPU right? Not sure if lowering the processor state and crashing is a PSU problem...I guess I have to RMA my CPU

Thanks, I actually have to pick performance and change my minimum processor state to 80%+ or it crashes
