Thinking of buying a new CPU, Need Advice

Greetings,

I'm giving serious consideration to upgrading my 6 year old Intel Core 3 540 processor to a Intel Core 5 6600k. I use my computer mostly for playing new and older PC games and since I upgraded my video card to a EVGA GTX 960 SC 2GB only a year or so ago, I figured it was time to upgrade the CPU alone if possible. However, my motherboard is a Gateway SX 2850-01 and I don't know if it will support the new processor.

If that is the case, which motherboard would you recommend purchasing if I do need to replace it? I'm not planning to overclock it as I'm hoping to make it last for at least another five years if possible. Also, I currently have 8 GB of Ram, use Windows 7 Home Premium 64 (I have NO desire to upgrade to Windows 10 if I don't have to) and my PSU is a XFX TS 550 80 Plus Gold.

Any advice you can give me on this will be greatly appreciated as always.

Solution
The ''K'' stands for multiplier unlocked, which is for overclocking. You're not doing that so you can reduce costs a bit and get an i5-6500. You need a new LGA1151 motherboard but also new DDR4 memory. DDR3 isn't supported/recommended on LGA1151/Skylake chipset.

i5-6500
H110/B150 motherboard
8GB DDR4-2133 memory

^ A reasonable example of what you could get.

The 6600k uses a different socket so you will need a new motherboard and if you don't plan on overclocking you dont need a 'k' CPU, you can get a 6500 or 6600. You will also need new RAM.

Is your copy of Windows OEM? If it is then the licence is tied to your current motherboard.
