I'm going to high school soon and will need a new laptop for school work... I've seen the MacBook Air 13" and the Surface Pro 4 (both of them would be the base model). Not sure which one would be better? It would be used for word documents, YouTube, music and media work. Here's the link to both of them;

Surface Pro 4: https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/pdp/Surface-Pro-4/productID.326546100?lc=1033

MacBook Air 13": http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/macbook-air?product=MMGF2B/A&step=config#

It depends on what you mean by media work. The air has the advantage in cpu and gpu but has a worse screen than the surface. Also the surface has a touch screen so if you like touch screen and want to use it to take notes using a digital pen rather than typing word documents then the surface wins.

As said before, it depends what you are exactly going to be doing with it. They are both great machines. The surface has a much better screen than the macbook air has, however that is a trade off for battery life. The macbook air is going to last longer on a single battery. With the surface you basically have to buy the keyboard to get the most functionality out of the machine which is an added on cost. I would personally go for the surface because of the better display, and I like the detachable keyboard. If you claim you are going to be watching videos and "media" work, then I think the surface would be better.
