I bought a pc from Walmart a while back that has a single 8GB stick of RAM (brand unknown) the PC is an HP, I'm building a new PC and intend to use the parts shown here http://pcpartpicker.com/list/zjdL7h Parts might change sightly. My question is if I can use the two new ram sticks and my old one for a total of 24GB.

Hello!

With RAM it is very important to make sure that the modules (sticks) are exactly the same otherwise you will have BSOD's and system instability.

It would be best that you buy either a new pair of sticks, or four sticks together.

As can be seen in your motherboard manual, your motherboard only supports RAM in dual channel (two sticks) or quad channel (four sticks) so putting in three would cause problems.

I hope this helps :)

Give it a try, no guarantees but not going to hurt anything ;) They might play and might not, often if they don't can use some minor voltage/timing adjustments to get them to play. If they play, you'll be fine, the DRAM will run in Flex mode, so effectively 16GB will run in dual channel mode and the odd 8 in single channel ;)
