Hey guys! I've been looking all over the net trying to find a good build 1000 or under, and I'm thinking about Tom's Hardware 1000 build from Sept 2016. But I think I want the community's input too.

I got a cheap 400 Acer laptop for all my Internet browsing and low key gaming word processing needs. I want a replacement for my 8 year old gaming rig. I wanna go intel.
The games I wanna play on it would be Skyrim, Civ 6, City Skylines, and other strategy games on Steam. Might get a MMORPG someday.
Also I want an EVGA card, cause I heard their service is extraordinary.

Any thoughts? (Thank you in advance!)

Thank you I appreciate the input! I was thinking instead of having an SSD and a regular drive to get one big let's say 1 TB SSD and having everything g on it. Would you say that's a waste of $$ or not even necessary? I got people saying it would be good for speed but its expensive and others saying it's only good to put the OS on it so not worth it.

There is not much value in a 1TB SSD... A 250GB SSD is plenty for your OS, Office and a few games / apps which puts the bang-for-your-buck with a mid-sized SSD paired with a HD for longer term storage. If you have the budget available, then by all means look toward the Crucial MX300 1.1TB or Sandisk X400 1TB, but it will drive the price up considerably.

FWIW... The Samsung 850 EVO is priced too high at the moment for consideration, and the WD Blue 1TB SSD got good reviews (new to the market) but is a bit overpriced as well. Other drives at this size and price range are not worth considering.

I see, think I'll go with the set up you suggested. One last question though, on the Motherboard. I see a lot of other boards that specify gaming, has Fatality, what's the difference between these boards? Should I look for one with USB 3.1 ? One of the reviews on that Micro ATX board said they had audio interference with their graphics card. Any thoughts? Should I splurge a bit on another board? Advantages to gaming boards?

Gaming or Fatality are just naming conventions. They don't inherently offer more / better features... I like Gigabyte or ASUS with the B150 or H170 chipsets for your purposes. USB 3.1 is nice, but are you really going to use it, or see a realistic difference over USB 3.0? Not likely.. Regarding the sound interference, stick with Gigabyte or ASUS.

I see, yeah I don't really see myself using 3.1. I got this habit of wanting the new hotness when I get a build together, my stuff always goes 700 over budget, stuff I don't need. Thanks for talking this build through with me.
