Odd freezing issue

Hello all,

Over the last two days i have had an odd problem happening. If i try to play a video that is over 30 minutes long or try to play a game, my computer would freeze. There is no graphical issue just the sound doing an odd looping thing (don't quite know how to describe it) and the system locks up. But if i play a video that is less than 30 minutes long there is no issue and just browsing the web causes no issues either. Internet videos yield the same results (short ones work and long ones do not). What do I do?

Hi there MythralOne,

Well, I believe you can start with just booting into safe mode. Also, you can restore your system to a point before the issues started.
In case the problem persists, then most probably, you are dealing with a hardware issue.

It would be nice to provide your system's specs.

Things you can try:
- Run your system with just a single RAM stick at a time. You can use other ports as well.
- Measure temps.
- Run some stress testing.
- Test your HDD, with a brand specific tool. Back up data if there's something wrong with it.

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Upon booting into safe mode everything works fine. I was able to watch a 50 minute video without the system locking up and i loaded up a handheld emulator which worked fine too.

My specs are the following:
Windows 10 64bit
nVidia Geforce GT 440
AMD FX 4100 quad-core processor @ 3.60 GHz.
8 gigs RAM

Addendum: HDTune came back all clear and the temp reading hovered between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius.

I am at my wits end now. Ive tried a clean install and nothing. Ive tried different drivers and nothing. I dont think its a heat issue as my case has 4 fans keeping things cool (2x case fans, 1x CPU fan and 1x Graphics card fan). The air coming from the PSU is cool air. Ive had the task manger open at the time it freezes and there is no spike in cpu usage or anything else for that matter. I noticed in safe mode that the nVidia driver display service and the avast service are disabled but not SUPERantispyware, but would an antivirus cause this? I tried watching a video with the nVidia service disabled and it still freezes.

Browsing is fine as is looking at images but watching anything or playing any game locks up the system. Also at the time the system locks up everything in the case sounds normal (no loud whirring noises or anything like that, just the sound of fans running). Is it the graphics card itself?

Addendum: Safe mode still works just fine though.

Addendum 2: After the clean install i did install Avast antivirus. Should clear that up.

That's really strange. Yeah, I believe you can uninstall the antivirus program and see if the issue persists.
Have you tried running some stress testing?

Well, it could be GPU related. The bad thing is that you don't really have integrated graphics, so you can easily see if this is the case.

No anti-virus and the issue persists. could it be the files themselves are somehow messed up? I just can't rap my head around the idea that its a problem with the GPU itself when it only freezes under extremely specific circumstances. The only stress testing i did was have the task manager open and opening various programs but that did not give any conclusive results. I dont feel comfortable doing anything that could potentially break things even more.

Addendum: Looking at my GPU there is nothing connecting it to the power supply. it seems to get power from the motherboard. is the motherboard at fault then?

Addendum 2: The motherboard is an ASUS M5A97 2.0.

Addendum 3: Tried with one ram stick and the same result.

Anybody else have any ideas? I can rule out the videos themselves as i moved a new video from my external over with the same result. After doing some research into this ive come to the conclusion that there is a conflict somewhere but i dont know where. With everything ive tried so far you would think there would be nothing left.

Addendum: When i reset and ultimately clean installed windows i elected to keep my personal files and remove non windows apps.

I've uninstalled just about everything i have and the issue still persists. This does not occur in safe mode only normal boot up. I thought i had the issue taken care of when i got through one video with out the system locking up but the second video froze with less than two minutes left. What in the name of hades holy fire do i do now?
