Need some Ethernet help

Hello,

I am finishing my first gaming PC build. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/MJqHRG

And I needed some help finding a good Ethernet card thing for gaming, And what are the different types of cables? I am confused here. (Also, I know my build has a wifi card, just ignore that because I didn't realize my Linksys re6700 range extender (for wifi) had an ethernet port on the bottom. I didn't realize this until today and I thought "might as well give it a try". And I hooked up a cable to the range extender and my PC and I think it seems a little faster. I will include some pictures of my setup if needed. Should I keep the Ethernet with the range extender in the future for gaming? Thanks for any info and suggestions on what type of ethernet card thing I should get. And what type of cable I should get for a future gaming PC?

No, other cards aren't faster.
The one on your motherboard is capable of gigabit speeds. 10/100/1000 As are all the add on cards you can buy.
A Cat5e cable is also capable of gigabit speed. Cat5e is the general standard.

Both of which are far, far faster than your 'range extender' thing, and your overall internet connection.


Someone will be along to say you 'need' Cat6, or "OMG Dude...you HAVE to get Cat7 or your connection sux!!"

Aren't other cards faster/better? Also what are the different types of cables? Which one is best for gaming?

So how I have my range extender is ok for gaming then? Just get a cat5e (or should I get cat6?) and swap it out for what I have now when I get a new computer? Because the range extender is supposed to amplify the wifi signal but since it has an ethernet port on it I thought that an Ethernet connection from my PC to the extender and then a wifi signal to the router would be faster. Is this true or not? Thanks

Why would you think a cat6 is faster. The ports on your PC and the range extender are both 1g. Cat5e is designed to run at 1g so the ports are already running at maximum speed.

It doesn't really matter you will only get a tiny fraction that speed since wireless does not run anywhere close to the magic numbers you see. Running a repeater will degrade the signal even more. You will be lucky to get 100m

Still the speed does not matter for games they need much less than 1m in most cases. The problem is the quality of the signal. Games do not like random delays. Any wireless signal no matter how you get it will have random issues that will appear as lag in the games. Hard to say how often it happens it depends on your house and your neighbors. Just having the repeater in your house will greatly increase the problem no matter if you plug into it directly or you buy a wireless card for your PC.

Pretty much if you will have to accept sub par game experience if you can not use a ethernet cable connected all the way to the router.
