So I'm building another Windows 98 gaming rig for a friend. The build includes an 800 MHz Pentium 3 processor as well as 256mbs of ram. It needs a video card but the motherboard only has PCI slots and no AGP slots. Can someone recommend a good PCI graphics card that will be appropriate for this build.

That is not a "PCI" video card, it is a PCI-Express card. It will not work, as their PC has no PCI-Express slot.

Be careful not to buy a PCI-E card by error. PCI-E is totally different than the older PCI.

LoL, neither of those cards have drivers for Win 9x either. The newest PCI cards with 9x drivers are ATI 9250 or GeForce 6200 but the BEST PCI card for a retrogaming system is undoubtedly the Voodoo 5 5500 PCI. A lot of the games from back then run GLide and look great with supersampling.

Or a FURY would be even better...xD With 4GB of HBM!

Errr....I mean a ATI Rage Fury MAXX..........with 64MB of ram....xD I still have a lot of those cards back at work...xD Can't bring myself to throw them away.

I recommend a GeForce 6200 PCI with (exactly!) 256MB Video-Ram.
There are good ones by BFG on ebay at the moment, for about or less than $20.

thats really strange that the guys motherboard only had PCI and no AGP slots? AGP was very much the standard when boards that could accomodate pentium III cpus were being produced.
anyway i say get a different motherboard that takes AGP!!!
and then i would reccommend a Geforce 6600GT

heres the specs from my retro win98se machine:

Asus P5PE-VM (intel 865g chipset) microATX motherboard
MSI Geforce 6600 GT (AGP 8x)
512Mb RAM (DDR400)
2x Sata2 SSD in RAID1 (connected at SATA150 speed)
connected via Gigabit ethernet to my FREEBSD nas4free server
which hosts all my apps + files
