My friend is looking to build a new computer. His current computer only gets him 15-25 FPS on low settings, he isn't looking for 60 FPS ultra settings, but playable gaming experience at 1080p medium settings.

He found a finished build on pcpartpicker that he really likes, and he asked me to make a build from scratch to see if I could get any more performance.

BeardRunner's Completed Build: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/yyJV3C

My pcpartpicker build from scratch: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/sYjWf8

Also note that he is going to use his hard drive in his current computer, that is why you don't see any hard drives in any of the builds. Feel free to change anything.

Thanks!

Not yet, we are both seniors in high school. I'll pitch the idea to him about waiting a year. Thanks for telling me

Your system EASILY is better. The 1050 is better than the 950, without question. The i3 is better for gaming. I think the 860K overclocked may have an edge with video editing and the like. I'd choose the Kingston SSD over the Adata SSD.

Swapped out a lower priced motherboard as neither of them are good and it does what you need it to, at a lower price. Swapped to 16GB of DDR4. Scrapped the CD drive, scrapped the SSD, scrapped the extra case fan, none of your components are going to generate enough heat to make them overheat. An extra fan would not hurt, so if your friend decides to, he certainly could add an extra fan as it looks like the case only comes pre installed with one exhaust. With the extra money, swapped the 1050Ti for a 3g 1060--could upgrade this to a 6g 1060 and be pretty close to your $600 bound (about the same as the older build you posted).
